To the family of Deputy Altman my prayers go out to you, you will miss Mike everyday but we will never forget him. There is not much anyone can say that will help you through this nightmare, the one thing that kept going through my mind was how much Clint loved being an Officer, and I know that Mike loved it also. There are a lot of people that are praying for you and know what you are going through (COPS-Concerns of Police Survivors) and will be there for you.
To Sheriff McDaniel our prayers and thoughts go out to you. The things you see everyday will never be has hard as what you have had to endure over the past week and days to come. We will remember your sacrifice.
To the Jackson County Sheriff employee's and Deputies you are in our prayers, you are all hero's, you have an Angel watching over you now.
Deputy Altman thank you for your sacrifice, you are a hero, look Clint up for me tell him his mother still misses him.

All too often as law enforcement officers we are confronted with dangerous situations; it is an accepted part of our lives and duties since we each took our respective oaths of office voluntarily. It is truly disheartening in this instance to know that Deputy Altman was thrust into a scenario with odds stacked so very overwhelmingly against him. Solace can only be found in the belief that Deputy Altman fought the good fight to the very end, and that justice has been served in avenging his loss.

My sincerest condolences go to the family of Deputy Altman, the brothers and sisters of the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, and especially to the Sheriff himself. On top of losing a fine deputy in the line of duty, the added sorrow of the loss of your soulmate is an even more bitter pill to swallow. Rest easy, brother Altman - we have the watch from here, and your eternal reward awaits you.

Saturday (February 3, 2007) I participated in something that I have never done before. The funeral procession of a Law Enforcement Officer. The funeral procession of Deputy "Mike" Altman. I did not know this man...but that didn't matter and as Myself and the others from our department pulled up to join the line and I was speechless. There were hundreds of patrol cars, someone even estimated close to 800. A majority of those there were just like me, had never met Deputy Altman...but like me, knew it didn't matter. When I got home I watched the news coverage and every LEO interviewed said the same thing "It doesn't matter who you are or what agency you're from, we all do the same job and when you put on that badge you are part of the family". So to my fallen brother, a hero who died before his time THANK YOU. Thank you for your ultimate sacrifice and for your time served. And to those reading this, remember that life is short and to tell/show those around you that you love them.

RIP - You will NEVER be forgotten!

To the family and loved ones of Deputy Sheriff Harold Michael Altman and his fellow officers with the Jackson County Sheriff's Department:

On behalf of our family, I want to extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you suffered when Deputy Altman was brutally murdered in the line of duty. His valor and courage will never be forgotten.

In reading the loving reflections left by family and friends, it is obvious that Mike was an amazing man who touched many lives in a positive way. Heaven has another hero, but how I wish this awful tragedy and horrific crime had not happened.

The circumstances of Mike's death were heart breaking and I know caused much anquish for all those affected. My heart also goes out to the Sheriff who lost not only a dedicated officer, but his beloved wife as well. the Sheriff's Department in Jackson County must be shaken to its core, but I know that their badges never shined brighter than when each officer pinned their badge on the next day to continue safeguarding their community.

I am also thankful that neither family has to face the ordeal of a trial.

May Mike's spirit continue to soar and his memory continue to inspire. May God hold Mike and his family members in the warmest part of his heart and the most gentle part of his soul.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the distinquished service Mike gave to his community and the citizens of Florida, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on January 30, 2007.

The Last Inspection
The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman,
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek,
To My church have you been true?

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't.
Because those of us who carry badges,
Can't always be a Saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
And at times my talk was rough.
And sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep.
Though I worked a lot of overtime,
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God, forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place,
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around,
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't…I'll understand."

There was silence all around the throne,
Where the Saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgement of his God.

"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

I stood outside today in the cold for hours waiting with my Mom and a friend so that we could pay our respects to Deputy Altman and his family as they rode by. When I drove through Freeport this afternoon I saw one of the greatest displays of love and support I've ever seen. There had to be hundreds of officers one after the other, citizens of Freeport started to line the streets - some held signs, some brought flowers, some just bowed their heads in silence. I just hope with all my heart that Mike was able to see the gathering that came to remember him today.

You will be Remembered. My Step-dad was off the night of the shooting at the Sheriffs' house, however was getting ready to go on duty for security at a basketball game. Before he could get in his patrol car the recall of all Deputies came across the radio. When I was first notified of the situation I did not know if my Step-dad had been involved in the shoot-out. If he had been on the clock for normal duty that night it could have been him. B-zone, which the Sheriffs' house is located in, is the same zone that he works. It has opened my eyes to how short life really can be. Thank You to all agencies that made and appearance at the services. Rest in Peace Mike.
