Reflections for Trooper Jonathan Kyle Leonard

750:

They say time heals all wounds, I don't know...

It's been almost 3 months now and the wound is still fresh.
Maybe a little more time.

The bond between police officers and their dispatchers is a
strong one. When you went out on that "hot" domestic call, answered that hold up alarm, or any of a thousand other calls, you didn't see us but we were right there with you. During my 20 years in law enforcement, it has always been my paramount duty to make sure my officers make it home safely at the end of their shift. When you're working this end of the radio, that's just "Job 1". So our heart aches when this doesn't happen. Not simply because it's our duty. But because of that special bond, we become less like co-workers and more like family.

We miss you, Jonathan. Not a day goes by that you're not in our thoughts and it still doesn't seem right not seeing your badge number on the post roster. You were a pleasure to work with. Not only because you didn't complain and yell at us when we gave you a call, but because of other little things as well. I can't remember ever working with you when you didn't switch your radio over to "TAC 3" when you were coming to post and ask if anyone in the radio room needed anything brought in. You knew how crazy it can get, and I greatly appreciated the thoughtfulness.

Maybe time will eventually heal the wound, but the scar will always remain. Rest in peace brother.

750,
You know all of us was in such a hurry to leave A sector when we first got over there and if I could have saw the future I would have never left. I am very thankful now that I had to stay that extra year and work with you. It was at that time we got put on almost the same schedule and we had alot of good/bad times together. We also had to do alot of paper work but I don't regret any of it. However the only regret that I have and probably everyone else that lived in that little apartment at Toler is that we all left you too soon. Sorry, REST IN PEACE JON. (Switch over to A)

To Trooper Leonard and his family: I would like for you to know that as a citizen of the state of Ky. I am saddened at the loss of another of our law enforcement officers. One loss is one too many. After reading the reflections of this wonderful trooper, my heart goes out to his family, his fellow brothers, and his friends. However, keep in mind that heaven is and will be a better place because of him. GOD CHOOSES ONLY THE BEST! Also remember that he is waiting to give us tickets to heaven someday.

I come to the ODMP often to remember my late fiancé Dennis. Everytime I come here it breaks my heart to know that yet another officer has fallen and that yet another family has to live their lives without the man they loved. My heart goes out to everyone who knew and loved Trooper Leonard. Know that you are not alone in the "journey" that you walk. Should you ever need anything please don't hesitate to contact me. The Davis Co. Sheriff's Office in Iowa will always know how to reach me. You will be in my thoughts.

From reading the reflections left for Jonathan, he sounds like he was a great man with a beautiful spirit. Those of you who knew him in life were so blessed to have been able to share in it. I hope that you will all continue to find a way to celebrate and remember Jonathan's life and the MAN that he was. Remember that Jonathan's life was about so much more than the way he died. Jonathan will continue to live on as long as we continue to remember him.

Trooper Leonard, thank you for helping to make this world a little safer for us all. YOU will not be forgotten. Please continue to watch over all of us as only you can. If you happen to bump into my late fiancé Dennis up there give him a big hug for me and the kids. It's been four years but we still miss him terribly.

Wishing you brighter and better days,

Jocelyne :)

We will never know why such a young person was taken. We only know that God makes no mistakes. Jonathan was a unique individual. You couldn't help but love that grin. He achieved his passion, his goal--that was to be a Kentucky State Trooper. He made us proud. He will be in our hearts forever and his family will always be in our prayers. He holds such a special place in many hearts in Delbarton. I know of one that loved you more than words could say. We will never forget!! Save us a place

I am a KSP Dispatcher and also the wife of a KSP Trooper. I was working at Post 10 Harlan the night that the accident happened. Although I did not know Tpr Leonard, my heart immediately began to break and the tears began to fall for his family and also for his family at Pikeville Post.
As a Dispatcher you become close to your Troopers. Although you don't go with them physically on each call your thoughts and prayers are constantly with them. That God watches over them and they remain safe during their entire shift and return home to their families at the end of their shift. So as a Dispatcher my heart truly aches for the Dispatchers at Pikeville Post for having to experience this worst nightmare a Dispatcher can go through.
As a wife of a KSP Trooper you constantly worry that your worse fear may come true. I kiss my husband before each shift as though it may be the last and when he comes home at night thankful that God has watched over him yet another night.
The KSP is truly a family that deeply cares for each of its members. Tpr Lenonard will remain forever in everyone's memory of this family. To Tpr Leonard's family and Pikeville Post I will continue to pray that God eases your pain. Remember that Tpr Lenonard made a huge impact across the state and he will never be forgotten!

This morning I hugged and kissed my Trooper and I thought about the events of 12/19/06 and 12/23/06.
On 12/19/06, my Trooper called to tell me that KSP had lost one of their own--my knees went to floor and my heart seemed to break. He was on the scene of the accident--something I had prayed he would never have to endure. As the night wore on, I held my phone and waited for him to call me back, as I whispered a continous prayer for 750's family and Post 9. When my Trooper called me back several hours later, his voice was heavy with sorrow, as he relayed the events of the night.
On 12/23/06, I, along with Post 9, paid tribute to a fallen hero. 750's funeral was something that will be etched in my memory forever. I felt proud that one of KSP's finest was given such an honorable service.
Though I did not know Trooper Leonard, my husband did. Because of that and even more so, because my husband is a Trooper who could have just as easily been the one in that accident, I will carry the memory of 750 with me each day.
Each night and every morning when I wake for another day, I say a prayer for those left in grief over Trooper Leonard. To his mother and father and his fiance--I was told two years ago when my husband joined the thin gray line, that this organization is a family and I feel I was told right. Post 9 will always carry you in their hearts and prayers and they will carry your loved one with them each day they serve as Troopers.
To Trooper Leonard--we may not understand the why, but I hold true to God's word and I know as my husband is out tonight, along with hundreds of other Troopers, that you are watching over them, that you are now their guardian angel. Rest in peace, you served our state well...

Jon, for the last six months, you, 695 and myself were the "Three Amigos" on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. I don't quite know what to do with myself on those nights anymore (aside from missing you).

Everywhere I go, I see your smiling face and hear you laughing at my goofy antics. I was always making a fool of myself just to get you and 695 to laugh.

I'll never forget all the times we'd all just sit around, talking about stuff that was just so off the wall. And how we'd laugh and laugh and laugh.....Tuesday and Wednesdays were my favorite nights of the week, Jon.

Because those were the nights that I got to hang out and work with you.

Like the rest of your family and friends here, I've got a great pain in my heart. I don't wish it away, though. I wear that pain like a badge, right next to my S.O. badge, over my heart. I'm grateful for that pain. I cherish it and am thankful for it.

Because it means I knew you well enough to call you friend.

And that's an experience I'd never trade away.

I love you, Jon.

Jonathan is missed by everyone at Post 9 and our hearts are broken. Tonight was my first shift back and it was very strange not to hear him on the radio. I wish he was still with us and I pray he is keeping an eye on us. Jonathan will be remembered and loved forever.
