Reflections for Trooper Jonathan Kyle Leonard

Jonathan was the epitome of what a Kentucky State Trooper should be: strong, brave, honest, loyal and hard working, but most of all he was a good friend to all of us at Post 9. I'll miss you Jonathan, and I promise we'll never forget you.

Jon Jon
The fun and scary times that we shared together in A sector of Pike County will never be forgotten. I owe my life to you on more occasions than I could ever count. You taught me everything I know about policing the eastern kentucky way. Ha Ha. John I just want you to know that I love you and will never forget you. I also promise to stay in touch with your family and never let the Legend of 750 die. You will be truly missed from now on. We done the funeral right and I just want to let you know that you after everybody left the funeral home that night Matt and I made you comfortable with your cuffs rolled twice and your tie undone just how you wore it. And a boggan too. I love you brother and I know I will see you again.

"If you find it in your heart to care for somebody else, you will have succeeded." -- Maya Angelou

Aloha Trooper Jonathan K. Leonard,
Thank you for your service and dedication to your community and your country. You and all officers that continue to lay your lives on the line and pay the ultimate sacrifice to keep our communities and country safe, will NEVER be forgotten.

I personally pledge, (after one of Hawaii's own, Honolulu Police Officer Steve Favela, lost his life in the line of duty protecting our Commander in Chief, President George W. Bush), to become a continuum of the ODMP light. That light is in the form of an ODMP tribute. People from all walks of life, regardless of age, race, religion, profession, education, and geographical location can share here, for that "LIGHT" comes from within the heart and soul of every person who cares to share a word or two on behalf of each and every fallen officer. Every fallen officer is an hero. The ODMP; Officer Down Memorial Page gives us a place to come together and share our feelings together.

As we say in Hawaii, we are `Ohana; We are family. God Bless this fallen hero.

May all who read this tribute take comfort in this Hawaiian prayer. I wish you peace and love beyond all understanding.

May you rest in peace Trooper Jonathan K. Leonard.
Me Ke Aloha Pumehana.

THE PEACE OF " I "
KA MALUHIA O KA "I"

Peace be with you, All My Peace,
O ka Maluhia no me oe, Ku'u Maluhia a pau loa,

The Peace that is " I ", the Peace that is "I am".
Ka Maluhia o ka "I", owau no ka Maluhia,

The Peace for always, now and forever and evermore.
Ka Maluhia no na wa a pau, no ke'ia wa a mau a mau loa aku.

My Peace " I " give to you, My Peace " I " leave with you,
Ha'awi aku wau I ku'u Maluhia ia oe, waiho aku wau I ku'u Maluhia me oe,

Not the world's Peace, but, only My Peace,
The Peace of " I ".

I started as a dispatcher at Post 9 at the same time 750 came out of the academy. We spent our first few months working together trying to figure out everything. I was told by some of the other dispatchers that I'd be closer to his class than any other because we'd be "growing up" together. That was so true. I was working when 750 was taken from us. I still can't imagine going into work and not hearing, "750, Pikeville." I've read some of the other entries on this website and other memorial websites and I'm so glad that other people know what kind of special person we lost Tuesday. He was one of my troopers...and my friend.

You are without a doubt the toughest Trooper I have ever known. I had the good fortune of knowing you and working with you. I will never come 10-8 again and not think of you. You will be missed by everyone who knew you.

I had the opportunity to attend the academy with Trooper Leonard. I remember the night that we tried on our uniforms for the first time and he looked at me and said, "Man, can you believe that we look like Troopers?" You didn't just look like one brother, you are one. Jonathan, it was an honor to have had the chance to get to know you, and I know that you will be missed by many. Rest in Peace my friend.

Id like to leave a reflection and say I am sorry and thank you to the family of Trooper Leonard. Althought I didn't know him and where he served I wanted to honor him and all the State Troopers in this state they do their jobs without thinking twice about lossing their own lives.

We will never be able to replace this loss to his family but wanted to take a moment and say thank you for his life to protect others.

To the Kentucky State Police family I have the up most respect for you all and think its great that you all are family as well. Im honor to say I am from Kentucky and am very proud of our State Police they do a great job in protecting our state. Hope God bless Trooper Leonard's family and extended family of troopers during this loss and get his family through the holiday seasons.

Trooper Leonard:

I attended your funeral service today, and it was totally moving. You will be missed by so many people right here in eastern Kentucky. It's hard for me to sit here and think of what to say, because I really don't know. I'm not a trooper, however I am what I consider a brother on the other side because I'm a law enforcement officer. The KSP really done a wonderful job with your ceremony, and you deserve everything and more that was done for you and your family. There is so much heart ache at post 9 right now, and there will be much more in the days ahead. I just want you to know that I appreciate you, and love you for the outstanding job you done as a trooper and you will be sadly missed by all. Godspeed brother.....we'll see you on the other side.

December 23, 2006

Jonathan,
Today is a sad day for our agency as well as many others. We suffered a great loss by losing you. Thank you for your service to the Commonwealth of Kentucky. We pray for your family, friends, and the men who worked close to you, that they may have comfort and peace during this time. I heard several great stories about you today. You make us proud that you were a part of the KSP. Although gone, you will not be forgotten. God bless you and rest in peace brother.
