Reflections for Detective Jared Scott Jensen

Hi Honey (yes... I still call you that),

This time of year when deep snow covers the ground I often envision the very deep snow upon that mountainous, hallowed ground where your earthly body lies. You - your Spirit - soars high above like an eagle and now, more often (thank God) I feel your presence.

In a few minutes, early on this Christmas Eve morning, I will be wrapping the 4th annual Christmas gift from me to you. It will be placed under the tree, along side the other three - one for each year since that horrible, horrible day. It, like the other three, contains love and a promise. When I am with you in Heaven, we'll open them, OK?

Love you Jared.

Love you son,

Dad

I was thinking of you and Ken today. This community will always remember your service. My wife was one of the last people to try to save your life that day at Memorial Hospital. She will never forget that day or the day she saw Ken. Everyday when I put on the badge and gun she looks at me with love. A love that is appreciated for what time it has had.

Thank you!

I was 19 when I went to your funeral and everytime I hear Where the streets have no name, I think of you. I think of why I want to be in law enforcment and you motivate me.

You've affected me in many positive ways and I will continue to carry your bracelet in my wallet, and the invitation to the reception in my vest.

Thank you.

Jared,

As you know since that horible, horrible day in February 2006, I have relied upon God to help me. But, I have also relied upon certain "rituals" (some might say) to help as well. I speak words from my heart to you every day and I have my Sunday walks where I talk to you and then I write a two page letter to you as well. Among other things, I have annually watched the February 27th, 2006 Memorial Service for you that was at Church of New Life. Although I have watched it each February 22nd, I could not watch it on that date this year. I knew that if I did, (as before) the pain, anguish and horror would come raging to the surface. The pain is surely there every single day of the year, but watching the video amplifies it even more.

Well, I have my rituals (if one will) that I "must" do and today I watched the video again for this year. Painful as it was, I needed to do it. As I watched the faces of those thousands of people in attendance, so many from law enforcement.... as I looked at the badges of them with a black band around each... it was such a clear indication of the mark you have left on this world. As Father Brad said then, " we are here to honor this wonderful man, this Holy Man's life." Those many, many people were there to honor you and show respect.

You will never be forgotten, Jared. Your memory, your legacy, the roadmap your earthly life has provided as to how a life should be lived ...with compassion, commitment and courage... is fully known by thousands. As for me, as Jeff said to you a few days ago, "not a day goes by...."

As Chief Valez said, " on that day, when you confronted malevolence, you knew you had to act and in that moment, you touched eternity."

When God calls me home and I can hug and kiss you again, I too will then share eternity with you in His Holy presence. Until then I will keep my vow to you.

I love you and miss you beyond description,

Dad

On days like today, it's a little tough to remember why I do the job, then I stopped by the bench on the way home to try to wrap my brain around it all...that's when it occurs to me that those are the same calls that reaffirm why I do it. Thanks for the reminder...

Thought I would stop in and leave a reflection. Hopefully, sometime this month I will meet with your Dad and have breakfast and talk about you and my son Mike. I know the daily struggle your Dad faces as I walk in his shoes. There are no magic words I can offer except for him to take one day at a time and to keep your memory alive which he is doing. Continue to watch over him, wrap your wings around him and all of your loved ones and protect them from harm.

Are no longer where they were before.
They are now wherever we are."

Heard your song on the way to the game last night....very fitting! We were wearing your jerseys, beer was good (so I'm told by Jeff and the guys), weather was perfect, and the Bears kicked some butt....great time! Only thing missing was YOU.
Thanks for all your little "visits", you always seem to know when it's really needed most...keep 'em coming!
Miss you J-Rod...
