My family and I were down in Virginia Beach just celebrating the birthday of my brother's son. It was such a joyful event to see my brother's son growing up to be quite the big boy even though Rodney has passed.

While celebrating, it was a horror when I heard the news of this officer because it brought all those horrible memories back to me.

To the friends, family, and coworkers of Officer Michael Kevin Saffran I send to you my heartfelt condolences. This time is not easy and I can remember it too well.

But know that time is the healer and even though Michael is gone from this earth, his memory will live on forever in Virginia.

Virginia officers are wonderful people who support family and friends a long time after someone in their department passes on. They are truly remarkable people as I am sure that Officer Saffran was.

He died a hero and I'm know he lived each day one too.

My prayers, as well as my families, go out to all of you during this time. I had to leave the area to go back home but know that my heart and soul are there with all of you now through this difficult time.

To Officer Michael Kevin Saffran, I hope you meet my brother in heaven. He was a wonderful man and all you wonderful men should stick together. Watch over your family and give them the strength they need to cope through this time.

God Bless to all of you.

TO: The family; loved ones; friends and department members: A POLICE OFFICER’S PRAYER:--- O, gentle Lord ! Keep the day/night watch with me. As I begin my tour of duty, I ask your protection from all mental, physical and spiritual harm. Sustain me with the knowledge that I am doing your work, endeavoring to keep peace among your people. Help me to be just as I enforce the law without prejudice or favor to anyone. May I be courageous but not reckless in carrying out my duties. Let me respond to all calls with haste realizing that so many are dependent upon me for life and safety. Support me with your consoling power when I am tempted to think no one really cares and that I am taken for granted. Sustain in me the conviction that so many thousands do care and are grateful for my presence. Grant that I may be loyal to my partner and my fellow officers, and that I may back them up effectively when called upon for assistance. Lord, I ask that I may return safely, after my tour of duty, to my loved ones and those who love me. I pray that I may be a good and honorable police officer; and after my tour of duty is over here on earth, may I enjoy the peace and happiness of heaven that you have promised to those who serve you well. AMEN. *** REST IN PEACE ***

There are never any words that can express words when a warrior makes the supreme sacrifice. While I didn't know Officer Saffran I am proud and saddened that he gave his life so that the rest of the citizens in the City of Cheapeake can rest knowing there are officers like Mike patroling the streets and keeping them safe from harm.

Mike, as your Field Training Officer I had the pleasure to know you on both a professional level as well as a personal level. I will never forget the feeling that I felt when I recieved that devastating phone call telling me you had paid the ultimate sacrifice. That is a feeling that I will haunt me forever. I am very proud of you and I will forever miss the smile and laugh that I came to love, along with the conversations we shared in the car during the shift. My life has now changed and there will always be an emptiness in my heart that will never be filled. I'm very proud to have been your Field Training Officer and never a day will go by that I wont reflect on the times we shared both on and off duty. Please watch over each of us as we continue to perform the job you loved so much. You and your family will always be in my thoughts and prayers.
