Reflections for Police Officer Michael Kevin Saffran

Mike--May your family and fellow officers in Chesapeake be strengthened by the support and dedication shown by all who attended your memorial service today. Your example of a life of selfless service will live on, though you may no longer be with us in person. As they move on in this life, your brother and sister officers, and especially your family, will be in our thoughts and prayers.

As I got onto the Interstate today to drive back to Hampton after the service, I unexpectedly met up with the motorcycle escort accompanying you to the Norfolk Airport, for your final journey to Baltimore to be with your father. It was an honor and priviledge to assist in in this escort--an experience I will never forget.

As you are laid to rest next to your father/mentor, I remember what is said every year as we gather in Washignton D.C. at the National Police Memorial:

"Well served, brother officer. May you rest in peace."

You served our country and our community. On earth you were a hero and in heaven you are a special angel. I will pray for your family. I know they are trying to figure out why this senseless tragedy had to happen , but it will never make sense.

I am forever grateful for your sacrifice.

I did not know that when we sat having breakfast Saturday morning that would be the last time I would speak to you. I only knew you for a short time since I had been back. You protected so many of us on Saturday. You are my hero and will always be in my heart. Watch over us always as our blue angel. You made the ultimate sacrifice and you will never be forgotten. Michael,
Although I never had the pleasure of meeting you, I feel like I knew you well. I, too, am a Navy veteran (23 years) who decided to follow a life-long dream of being a Police Officer and in just a few days I will be finished with my field training and will be out on the streets "on my own".

I know the pride you must have felt when you retired from serving our country for 20 years; I know the pride you must have felt every time you put on that CPD uniform; And I know that you never gave a second thought to confronting the coward who took your life on October 8th.

From one Sailor to another, I thank you for your unselfish dedication in your service to our great nation.

From one Police Officer to another, I thank you for your bravery and courage in the face of danger. Were it not for your heroic actions, a violent criminal may still be on the loose today.

To your dear wife, step-children, family and friends I offer my deepest sympathy and pray that God will see them all through this difficult time.

Rest in peace, brother. We have the watch now.

My heart breaks for your family & friends. I used to visit Chesapeake fairly often so it hits close to home to hear of an officer down there. I will keep you in my prayers as I know all too well the pain you are going through. It doesn't get any better, you just learn how to make it through one day at a time. God bless you!
