Reflections for Police Officer Peter Alan Grignon

Myself and three officers from my department are going to your funeral in the morning. Not because we knew you personally but out of respect for you and your family. I just wanted you to know that you will not be forgotten. I think of officers like yourself everytime I put on this uniform. I want to come home at the end of the shift but it might not always work out that way. To your wife... I hope that you find peace.

Rest in peace brother. Although I never had the pleasure to work directly with you in your short time with us, your sacrifice touched me in a very personal way.

While on my way to work that morning, I made the call to the Radio Room to find out why I-64 was being closed, and the call taker relayed the news to me...I felt like it might as well have been my own flesh and blood that had fallen.

My deepest sympathy goes out to your wife and family, and the brothers and sisters who had the priviledge of working with you in the 2nd Division.

Godspeed

Our sincere condolences go out to the family of Officer Grignon and to all the personnel of the Louisville Metro Police Department who worked with him.

While it is no consolation for your loss, remember that we, and many others in this country, appreciate the sacrifice that he made in his effort to ensure the safety of the public.

God bless.

My heartfelt sympathy goes out to the family and fellow officers of Officer Grignon.

While no one who wears a badge wants to be put into such a situation, you put yourself into the line of fire to protect those whom you might not have even known despite the danger. While I did not have the privilege to have known him personally, I am certain that he has found a place in heaven.

Rest in peace my friend; those of us who remain will cover your post on the thin blue line.

THE POLICEMAN’S LAST ROLL CALL ...

THE POLICEMAN STOOD AND FACED HIS GOD, WHICH MUST ALWAYS COME TO PASS.
HE HOPED HIS SHOES WERE SHINING, JUST AS BRIGHTLY AS HIS BRASS.
"STEP FORWARD NOW, POLICEMAN. HOW SHALL I DEAL WITH YOU?
HAVE YOU ALWAYS TURNED THE OTHER CHEEK? TO MY CHURCH HAVE YOU BEEN TRUE?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain’t.
Because those of us who carry badges can’t always be a Saint.
I’ve had to work most Sundays, and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I’ve been violent because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny that wasn’t mine to keep,
though I worked a lot of overtime when the bills just got too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help, though sometimes I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me, I’ve wept many unmanly tears.
I know I don’t deserve a place among the people here,
they never wanted me around except to calm their fear.
If you’ve a place for me Lord, it needn’t be so grand.
I never expected or had too much, but if you don’t, I’ll understand."

There was silence all around the throne where the Saints had often trod.
As the Policeman waited quietly, for the judgement of his God.
"Step forward now, policeman, you’ve borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven’s streets, you’ve done your time in hell."

Grignon family;
I lost a dear friend a couple of years ago, who was doing his job as a Deputy Jailer. It still hurts today, but it's not as intense of a hurt as it was. Peter will never be forgotten and his sacrifice will forever be reflected upon for his bravery and unselfish love, for his community, family and friends. Please know that we will continue to do our jobs, no matter the consequences. Like Peter, even if we knew we were going to be killed during our next shift, we would still come 10-8 and face what is coming, to try and make sure someone else won't have to be hurt by "the bad guy". We don't fear but we do our jobs cautiously and safely, as much as possible. We lost another brother, and you lost a wonderful man, but know we will continue the good fight and keep this country safe. All we have to offer is our sincerest sympathies and a true thank-you, for letting us have Peter, if only for a short time. Take care and Godspeed.

To the family and friends of Ofc. Peter Grignon, I hope you will take comfort in knowing that Peter is in a better place now. He now has the ability to watch over us all as we take over where he left off protecting our community. Its not how Ofc Grignon died that made him a hero, it is how he lived that made him a hero. Rest in peace brother, you will not be forgotten.

My fiancé, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. Dennis was a Deputy Sheriff with the Davis County Sheriff's Office in southeast Iowa. Dennis died doing a job he loved, just as I'm sure Peter did. It saddens me to know that Dennis was not the first to die in the line of duty, nor will he and Peter be the last to die this way.

Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Officer Grignon's family, friends, and co-workers must be feeling. My heart goes out to you all, especially to his wife. No one can truly understand the pain of our loss until they've walked in our shoes. I wish I could give you a few words of wisdom to help you through this tough time, but there isn't anything I can really say or do to make the situation better. Just know that my thoughts are with you. If you ever need anything please do not hesistate to contact me. Dennis' department will always know how to reach me.

Please accept my condolences on behalf of the McElderry family and remember that Peter is part of huge law enforcement family. If you ever need anything any number of them will be there for you (as I've quickly found out!) From reading the many reflections posted here, I am certain Peter was well respected and well loved. You were blessed to have had him in your life, even for a short time.

Thank you Officer Grignon for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please say "hello" to my fiancé Dennis for me.

Wishing you brighter and better days,

Jocelyne :)

It is news that no family wants to hear and no officer wants to face. Brother Grignon, you gave your life for doing what you dreamed of doing..I can not think of a greater sacrifice. May you keep us safe down here and know that even for those of us who never got to know you, you will forever remain in our hearts.

At the beginning of every shift I supervise, myself and the other officers on shift dedicate the day to the memory of a fallen officer.

Today, March 26, 2005 we dedicated the shift to the memory of Police Officer Peter Grignon who died in the line of duty just three days ago.

When one law enforcement officer falls, we all stumble for a while, but we will carry on.

Officer Grignon's sacrifice will never be forgotten.

To the family, friends and c-workers my prayers go out to you. As I looked and read Peter's memorial, I could see Clint's face there also. Just know that Peter was met by the finest, at the gates of heaven.
I know that you will miss Peter everyday, because there is not a day goes by that I don't miss or think of Clint. But rest assured we will never forget Officer Grignon or his sacrifice he made to make this a better place for all of us to live.
Officer Grignon tell Clint that his Mom loves him the most, you'll get a big smile from him.
