Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Trooper Darryl Louis Haywood, Sr.

Dear Family of Trooper Haywood,
Please accept my sincerest condolences on the loss of your father and husband. I pray that the Lord will give you peace and comfort in this difficult time ahead. My family went through a similar tragedy almost 2 years ago when my father and another deputy were struck and killed while helping a disabled motorist. The pain was overwhelming, but this law enforcement community gave us such a tremendous source of love and support to help get us through this. And, I pray they do the same for your family. May you find comfort in God's love and in the memories of your husband and dad.

All my prayers,
Valarie Bell Wright

TO: The family; loved ones; friends and department members: A POLICE OFFICER’S PRAYER:--- O, gentle Lord ! Keep the day/night watch with me. As I begin my tour of duty, I ask your protection from all mental, physical and spiritual harm. Sustain me with the knowledge that I am doing your work, endeavoring to keep peace among your people. Help me to be just as I enforce the law without prejudice or favor to anyone. May I be courageous but not reckless in carrying out my duties. Let me respond to all calls with haste realizing that so many are dependent upon me for life and safety. Support me with your consoling power when I am tempted to think no one really cares and that I am taken for granted. Sustain in me the conviction that so many thousands do care and are grateful for my presence. Grant that I may be loyal to my partner and my fellow officers, and that I may back them up effectively when called upon for assistance. Lord, I ask that I may return safely, after my tour of duty, to my loved ones and those who love me. I pray that I may be a good and honorable police officer; and after my tour of duty is over here on earth, may I enjoy the peace and happiness of heaven that you have promised to those who serve you well. AMEN. *** REST IN PEACE *** Sent to you by the father of Master Officer J.D.Koeppen, Capital City Raleigh North Carolina; Trooper D.C.Koeppen, New Jersey State Police and Cadet Officer A.M.Koeppen, Wilmington North Carolina

Trooper Haywood,

I am very proud to be able to say that I have worked next to you. From the highway, to county roads, and even on the city streets. Our paths crossed many times. You were always there to help a fellow LEO. You showed me that many times over.

You have impacted me in ways that you will never know. I am very sorry that your watch ended this soon. I'm sure that you will continue with your duties in what is still to come. Rest in peace Brother Haywood; we'll keep the watch from here. May GOD bless you and your family.

Trooper Haywood will be sorely missed in Volusia County. He was never seen without a smile on his face. My prayers go out to his family and agency. Please find comfort in knowing it was obvious there was nothing else he would rather do than being a Trooper.

For those of you who do not know Darryl, he was a true professional. As former members of Highway Unit #1 in the Bronx, we use to love chasing speeds on I-95. The man was always a gentleman; soft spoken yet on a mission to insure everyone’s safety. I’m certain that as I type this he is hiding behind a statue in front of the pearly gates; radar gun in hand, doing what he loves to do. The Florida Highway Patrol has suffered a tremendous loss. God bless the family of Trooper Darryl Haywood. Rest in peace my brother, you will be missed…….

To the family of Trooper Haywood.
I visit this website often after my husbands death EOW 4-21-04. I just wanted to let the family know that you are in my prayers.

Trooper Haywood showed nothing but the utmost professionalism to the public and to fellow officers in the field.

He stood tall, secure in the knowledge that he possessed character and resolve to do the best job possible.

Having arrived minutes after the crash, the overwhelming feeling of frustration then has now turned to reflection and appreciation for the life he led.

We appreciate his service, his character, and his contribution to the law enforcement family. He will truly be missed.

Please be careful out there.

Life is filled with many mysteries, however it is not meant for one to understand all things. Death has a season of it's own and this earthly home fades away. It is hope that sustains us. To the family of Trooper Haywood, look to the hills from whence cometh your help and remember all your help comes from the lord.

WOW. Not only did he serve the citizens of New York....He didn't have enough of it....He had to go somewhere else and serve too. That says much for his character and his sense of responsibility to any community he lives in. He died going for it....as ALL fallen officers do....that means a lot. This was a loss to his brothers and sisters in New York and in Florida. For this I pray for peace for Trooper Hayword's family, friends and co-workers of the Florida Highway Patrol. All the best to all who served with this fine warrior for the law.

“REMEMBER ME”
Law enforcement officers are, indeed, a special breed of people. Ask anyone on the street and they will tell you that they would not have our jobs for anything in the world. It takes something special to do what we do and at the same time be able to even contemplate retirement. We try to be optimists. Unfortunately, there are a few of us who will never make that date with retirement. By the very nature of our job, we are at risk everyday of losing our lives, either at the hand of some deranged individual or in some other situation that we, by virtue of our occupation, may be unable to avoid. Some people have recognized the hazardous duties we involve ourselves in, the risks we take, and the pride we take in accomplishing that job. There is National Law Enforcement Week, dedicated to us who gladly accept the responsibility of protecting the citizens in our respective jurisdictions. National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Day is dedicated to those who gave their lives in the line of duty. These are but a two examples of remembrances specifically for law enforcement personnel. Remembrances that come but once a year. We should remind fellow officers of another type of remembrance, one that will last a lifetime. Sooner or later, a doctor will pronounce us dead. It is inevitable. Regardless of whatever happens, death is the end we will all have to face.
