My deepest sympathy is with your family and your department. I was working when I saw the breaking news that you, a fellow law enforcement officer, had fallen. My heart and prayers go out to you. You will never be forgotten. GOD SPEED BROTHER!

SR. DISPATCHER, JUSTINE STICKLEY
HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE

October 3, 2004

The policeman stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry a badge
can't always be a saint."

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at time I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgement of his god.

"Step forward now, policeman,
You've born your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell"

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Trooper Haywood. The job we do is not easy and many times is not glamorous. We work long hours and do things others can't or do not want to. With that comes the danger of the unspoken risks. Though God has taken Trooper Haywood from his family we can hold to a small bit of warmth knowing he is off hells streets and walking the streets of heaven.
Rest in peace brother, we have the watch now.

Darryl, I meet you, March 2000 at the Florida Highway Patrol Academy in Tallahassee. We became members of the 98th recruit class; there we spent 26 weeks together. We met as strangers, but left as a family with 98 brothers and sisters on September 2000. I can remember talking to you about your day’s with the New York City Police Department and you had the accent to go with it, so that made the stories even more intriguing. What I remember the most is that no matter what was going on you always had something positive to say, even when we were at the firing range in August, wearing our vest.
I know you are in a safe place and the members of the 98th recruit class will never forget you.
“FHP STANDING TALL THE 98TH IS ABOVE THEM ALL.” Darryl, I know you are watching over us now, my prayer’s go out to your family. 10-64 1325

I worked w/ Darryl for many years in Hwy 1 of the N.Y.P.D., prior to his transfer to intel where he became one of the Mayor's drivers. Darryl was always on the top of his game and always willing to help out and go the extra mile. He was a hard and diligent worker, whose work did not go unnoticed as was proven by his transfer from one elite unit to one of the most elite units in the Dept. F.H.P. was quite lucky when they appointed a P.O. of Darryl's caliber. I know he was a shining star for the F.H.P. My biggest regret was that I procrastinated ingetting in touch w/ him after I too moved down to Fl., and now I will only get to see him one last time. God speed Darryl to you, and your family. You will truely be missed. Another HERO to be added to the wall.
