Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Sergeant Rodney Lee Davis, Jr.

We are deeply saddened that the world has lost another brave hero. He has touched many lives, directly or indirectly, that will not be the same without him. Heaven needed another hero, and he answered the call. He will be loving and protecting his family from Heaven, proudly showing them off to the other angels. We will all keep him close, in our hearts, thoughts, and prayers, until we are one day bestowed the honor of shaking the hand of a true American hero. Goodbye and Rest in Peace.

Rodney,
What do I say and where do I begin??? First, I can’t believe that I’m sitting here writing this, it is unreal that you are gone, I’ll never forget those words “We have an Officer down, We have an Officer down”… I believe those words will haunt me forever. We had so many good times together, on and off duty, and have been cheated out of so many more to come. Just the day before I was laughing at you (you were wearing dress pants and dress shoes) while we were walking through the woods trying to “flush” that guy out. I remember when you were fresh out of the academy and I was still in the auxiliary program, I believe you are one of the only ones that liked having me riding with you. Neither of us knew what we were doing, but we did have fun. I am still sorry about that night I got you in trouble with your wife, I promised I’d have you home by 1 and ended up dropping you off at 4... Going to miss those times we had, but I’m sure glad we had the ones that we did. You are missed, I love you Brother, Rest in Peace.

To the Greene County Sheriff's Office, our thoughts and prayers are with you. May you all pull together and support one another as you adjust to this loss and the changes that will come with it. PLease know that all of us here in Virginia and beyond are behind you.

This has been a rough year for us in Virginia--we are up to eight officers in eight months. Those of us wearing the badge in Virginia must step forward, to support each other and carry on the work that has taken these officers from us. In the name of Sgt. Rodney Davis and these other officers, we must and will carry out their mission.

"Well served, brother officer--May You Rest In Peace."

To the family of Sergeant Davis. I hope this story helps you smile.

My 5 year old son asked me who was the policeman. To that, I responded that he was a hero. My son asked me where did the hero go. I said he was patrolling heaven now and that he was with God. My son said oh, ok.

Later that day, we took him to the local fair. I pointed to the sky where several balloons were floating. My son asked me where the balloons went. I said that the balloons float up in the sky. I was beginning to tell him that the balloons float for a while and then come back down to the ground. Before I could say that he asked me if the balloons floated to heaven. I said that they didn't fly that high. My son said I think the hero is going to catch one. I smiled and said maybe you're right. He then said I think the hero is going to catch them all and give them to God. I shook my head in admiration and said you're right, the hero is going to catch them all.

Rodney, Smooth sailing. You're entire family is in our thoughts.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say.

But first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.

I'm writing this from Heaven. Here I dwell with God above.

Here, there's no more tears of sadness; Here is just enternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.

Remember that I am with you every morning, noon and night.

That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through

God picked me up and hugged me and he said,'I welcome you.

It's good to have you back again, you were missed while you were gone.

As for your dearest family, They'll be here later on.

I need you here badly, you're part of my plan.

There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.'

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.

And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.

And when you lie in bed at night the days chores put to flight.

God and I are closest to you....In the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years.

Because you are only human they are bound to bring tears.

But do not be afraid to cry: it does relieve the pain.

Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.

If I were to tell you, you would not understand.

But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is over.

I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you, and many hills to climb;

But together we can do it by taking one step at a time.

It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you to;

That as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain;

Then you can say to God at night...."My day was not in vain."

And now I am contented...that my life was worthwhile.

Knowing as I passed along the way I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low:

Just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.

When you're walking down the street and you've got me on your mind;

I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go...from that body to be free.

Remember you're not going...you're coming here to me.

I will always be with you!

Rodney,
I will always remember hearing about your senseless death. I was on the way in to work and made my daily stop at a small convienence store just inside of Albemarle County. The same store where you and I dealt with the 13 year old driver of a stolen road tractor! Your humor and love of what you did made quite the impression on me. Seeing your vehicle parked in front of the Sherrif's Office and viewing the outpouring of the citizens towards you, made me proud to have helped out your agency in their time of need. God Bless your family and fellow deputies in this time of need. Thank You for protecting the county in which I reside. Rest in Peace My Brother.
