To Trooper Anthony G. Cogdill's family, I send my sincerest regrets on your loss; especially to his wife, son and parents.

Know that your loss will mean other lives saved. I read the ODMP frequently to remind myself of the risks to my life while working as a police officer. Traffic accidents are one of the most common causes claiming lives and I am more vigilant at every traffic stop after learning of another needless death.

Thank you Trooper Cogdill; your sacrifice may mean my survival.

Constable Joe Tataryn

Anthony,
Rest in peace Brother. We will be praying for you and your family. This could have happened to any one of us. There is nothing that you could have done to prevent this tragedy. Maybe God has bigger plans for you.

There are but two persons who protect the sinful human race from destroying itself. One is God's Holy Spirit. The other is the Peace Officer. Without them, we would all perish at each other's hands.
According to Romans 13.1-5...
God ordains the Peace Officer’s profession.
The Peace Officer is sent by God.
The Peace Officer is vested with God's authority to enforce the law.
A Peace Officer's badge is to be honored by us, because it is honored by God.

To the family of Trooper Anthony G. Cogdill and the North Carolina Highway Patrol, your extended family of Law Enforcement Officers grieve with you during this time. I pray that God will wrap his loving arms around each of you and comfort you during this most difficult time.

To all my brothers and sisters, please remember the fallen officers we have lost. Remember the men and women who died trying to make this world a safer and better place for us all to live in.
May God be with you every day, please remember, we are a part of the largest family in the world and when one hurts we all hurt.

Though our badges and uniforms may be different, our mission is the same. Rest in peace with our other fallen Brothers and Sisters. We will continue the fight in your honor.

Once again we are reminded of just how dangerous this job can be. Trooper Cogdill, you have given the ultimate sacrifice. Your presence and profession attributes will leave a void in the entire justice system. I will miss looking up in my rear view mirror, knowing you have come to offer assistance on a traffic stop, or working with you on vehicle check points. To your family, I pray that God’s grace will sustain you in this time of extreme sorrow. One thing that will never leave my memory, when coming into station one, there he was, Anthony’s son, dressed in a exact replica of a Highway Patrolman’s uniform right down to the stripe on his little pant leg to the little badge over his heart. When asked who he was, he replied, “ I am policeman just like my daddy”. Don’t ever let him forget who his daddy was, or what a good man he was and the sacrifice he made so that little boy’s dreams can someday be a reality.

Deepest sympathy to the family of Trooper Anthony G. Cogdill.

Anthony - It seems so long ago when we both were Deputy Sheriffs in Buncombe County. We both moved on, in different directions and for different reasons. You have left a legacy of professionalism in two law enforcement agencies, and will be missed by your family, friends, and co-workers. May you Rest in Peace.
