Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Senior Trooper Anthony Greg Cogdill

Several years ago while traveling through N.C. to Tennessee I became lost. Not something a State Trooper likes to admit. But a feeling of relief came over me when I looked up and saw a N.C. State Trooper Car ahead. I flashed my headlites and the patrol car pulled over in a parking lot. I walked up and told the young trooper I was sorry for bothering him, but that I was a S.C. Trooper and I was big time lost. That turned out to be the first and last time I ever saw Trooper Anthony Cogdill. He gave me my directions and we talked shop for some time. We exchanged addresses and I told him if he ever got down to S.C. and needed anything I would be glad to repay the favor. I guess thats the biggest fringe benefit of being a police officer. No matter where you travel, you always have friends in uniform just waiting to help. Anthony Cogdill was sharp and left a lasting impression with me. He will never be forgotten by me or the thousands of other people he met in his lifetime. God bless Anthony and his family forever.

Without reservation I shed a tear as I read these reflections. No we have never met, but we are one in the same. This job makes it so. I am sorry for your loss and wanted to let you know. Trooper Cogdill is thought of more than who leavese a message here. So many read but dont take the time to write.

Your a brave hero and for your sacrifice my friend, Heaven was rewarded with the bravest of the brave. I hope and pray you watch over all your family and your brothers down here, and know that so many are proud to have had the oppurtunity to have met you. May God bless to you and your family and I'll leave with a song I heard the other day and made me think about you and Sgt Jeff Hewitt.

"If you came back from Heaven"

I wouldn't know what to say
I wouldn't know what to do
If you came back from heaven
And I could look at you
Would I fumble for the words?
Would I be a little shy?
Would I bust right out with laughter?
Or break right down and cry?

Oh,if you came back from heaven
Would it be like it was then?
Could we just pick up,where we left off
And try it all again?
Oh,if you came back from heaven
It would freeze me in my tracks
And I hope God knows,if he let you go
I'd never send you back

Do your kisses feel the same?
Do you still have the same touch?
And will you whisper softly
'Coz you've missed me so much?
Have you heard all my prayers
When I lay down at night?
And did you feel my body
When I held your pillow tight?

Oh,if you came back from heaven
Would it be like it was then?
Could we just pick up,where we left off
And try it all again?
Oh,if you came back from heaven
It would freeze me in my tracks
And I hope God knows,if he let you go
I'd never send you back

And if,God forbid, you leave this earth again while I see
I hope he knows if you go you'll be bringing me

You'll NEVER be Forgotten but very much missed. Speaking from another brother of law, we will meet again on the other side of those pearly gate's. My life was almost taken by a head on collison a year after our loss of a fine trooper.. Our prayer go out to your family and friends and one strong young man and wife.

Anthony,
It seems impossible that it has been 2 1/2 years since you left us. I remember the times we had in Junior High and High School and you always had that crazy smile that made everyone wonder what you were up to. I got to talk to your Dad a few months back and caught up on some years lost. Life continues here, but your memory lives with many people around. God Bless you, Anthony. I miss you.

Trooper Cogdill
Today is Veterans Day and I find myself sitting here reflecting on all the lives that have been lost throughout the many years to protect and defend the freedoms that we as a nation enjoy today. Being a Veteran myself, I fully understand how not one of us thinks of ourselves as a hero or anything special. We are just us. I did not know you personally, but sharing the same uniform and badge with you means that we had a bond. From all that I've read and heard about you, I'm quite certain you were someone that anyone would like. I pray that Heidi and Cody are both doing well, I'm certain they miss you, we all do. Thank you for your service and keep an eye on us all down here, please.

I wish to acknowledge the distinquished service Trooper Anthony Cogdill gave to his community and the citizens of North Carolina, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on May 30, 2003. Trooper Cogdill, you are a true hero and your valor and dedication will never be forgotten.

My son Larry Lasater was fatally shot during a foot pursuit of two bank robbers on April 23, 2005. Larry and I were both N.C. natives and Larry was an avid Tarheel fan. When my son was killed, he and his wife Jo Ann were expecting their first child. Another little Cody. Maybe one day these two will meet.

Anthony,
Today, July 15,2005, you will be honored once again in a very special way. A move over law has been signed by Govenor Mike Easley that will help protect your fellow commardes. It also has the power to protect another family from going through the heartbreak we experienced when your murder got only a handslap for taking your life. No one else will be that lucky thanks to this law. I miss you more and more with each passing day. Your infectious laugh no longer rings in our home or my ears. Your long arms around my shoulder as you say "Mom, I love you!" Your brother and I think of you daily and rejoice in the fact that you are at home with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and we too will one day be reunited with you. Love with all my heart, Mom

Anthony,
I just wanted to let you know I was thinking about you. It does not seem like it has been 2 years since your smiling face has left us to be with the lord. You have so many wonderful memories that was left here in everybody's heart though. I finally got out of the crazy Wal-Mart and came to the ER to work. I just wish when i see all the HP coming in that it was you.I have seen Stan in here and we always talk about you. Boy does he love Cody!!! Your father is such a wonderful man, I know where you got your personality from. Everytime he leaves i just sit here and think about you. But i know in my heart we will meet again in a much more safe place, Heaven!!!!

At the beginning of every shift I supervise, myself and the other officers on shift dedicate the day to the memory of a fallen officer.

Today, May 30, 2005 we dedicated the shift to the memory of Trooper Anthony G. Cogdill who died in the line of duty on this date two years ago.

When one law enforcement officer falls, we all stumble for a while, but we will carry on.

Trooper Cogdill’s sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Anth.

I miss you so much!! Your baby boy is 5 now! He is getting so big! He is a ham! I love to hear all the stories he has to tell and things he has to say! He is doing really well in soccer he tells me and he is enjoying it! Heidi said he is a natural at it! He is my big buddy! Wes and I went to the dr. Wednesday and found out we are going to have a baby boy!! I am excited but a little scared!! I am glad it is a little boy because he is going to have part of your name!! You and I were so close I cannot have a baby boy and not give him part of your name! You always have and had a special place in my part!! When I told Cody GiGi is having a boy and asked him to help us think of a good cool name he said ok! Then he said ok I know one how about Cody! Then he said how about Alexander or Cody Alexander!! He thinks thats a coll name!! He is right it fits him well!! I sat here yesterday telling a few people that if you were here I would be in deep trouble! You used to always tell me that you couldn't wait till I had kids and you were going to find the noisiest toy and one with a million pieces!! I am so glad to have had you for as long as we did and to have made some real good memories!! I love you so much and miss you tons! Can't wait till we see you in heaven one day and you get to see you other little nephew!!
I LOVE YOU SO MUCH!

Trooper Cogdill: I saw the white cross on I-40 at the site of the crash & the bridge that was named in your honor. I wondered what happened there, and now I know. I drove in silence for many miles after seeing the cross. Troopers are a brotherhood. I never knew you but I grieve for you. When I travel I-40 I will stop and remember your service & dedication. May you rest in peace.
