Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Senior Trooper Anthony Greg Cogdill

Anthony,
March 12th you would have been 37 years old. How old are you in heaven? 32? 37? Forever an undefinable age? I wonder what your life would be like today if you still lived here on earth. I know my loneliness and lose would be less. Well one thing I know for sure you have now achieved the perfection you always sought for here on earth. Bask in His love and light and perfection.
Love you,
Mom

May God Bless the family, friends and co-workers of Trooper Cogdill. I pray everyday for the men and women who are brave enough to wear the badge and protect others. I have a brother in law enforcement and I pray for his safety. It seems this day and time some people have no regard for life much less the life of an officer. Please continue to watch over the men and women that wear that badge. You are a hero in blue!!!

For the last several years I have shown your "In The Line Of Duty" Video Tape Segment "Perpendicular Shooting" of your 1995 Officer Involved Shooting from when you worked for Bumcombe County in July of 1995. I think even during your life and career you made a difference in saving officers lives through training through your experiances. However today 2-11-2008 Fox Carolina News 21 Channel in Greenville SC did a story about your death and North Carolina's Revised Move Over Law. Again even after death you have been able to help train others now even citizens in saving more officers lives. God Bless you and your family your father did well on the story.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I went to Andrews NC Saturday, December 21, 2007, and picked up Cody so he could spend the night with me. We had a wonderful time together. He is very well-mannered and just as full of tease as you always were. So many of his actions remind me of you. We had to return him Sunday at 4:00 but we made the most of the time we had. He and I put a new flower on your roadside cross and he asked a lot of questions about you. Please know we miss you terribly and will see you again someday. Merry Christmas! Mom & Cody

Anthony,

Its been a thousand times over since I should have written to you. I think about you often when I am out on patrol and remember back to the days at the YMCA and our mini-prep sessions when you helped me get ready for the academy in 2001. Despite my break in service, I am back with the patrol and love it. Wish you were here to experience it with me. You are a great man and have paid a price for your family and this agency that few have. I and many others here miss you buddy.

My thoughts and prayers are with the parents, family, friends of Trooper Cogdill.
I lost my Robert Ambrose the same way. I live you pain and understand what you are going through everyday.
Miles may separate us, but love know no bounds.

Anthony,
I just wanted to say hey man. You talked to me about getting in the Patrol in 1999. I still remember that day. I just said a prayer for you and your family. We know the same God and he will provide the peace and comfort. Take Care in Heaven and know that you will always be remembered as a motivator!!!

Its been over a year since I have visited this site. It is amazing to me that Anthony touched so many lives in such a special way that people still come here to leave reflections. I think of Anthony (and the rest of my family that I so rarely see) often. It makes my heart warm to read all the touching thoughts people leave here. You see a hero, good friend, great father, and overall good person. I see an older cousin that didn't have to pay a bit of attention to me or my older sister, but made my whole day when he and his brother, Patrick, did. To everyone: thank you for sharing your thoughts and memories.

I was in Washington DC yesterday for a side trip before I flew home. We visited the National Law Enforcement Memorial there. I found your name on the wall and the emotions came back to me. It is hard to believe 4 years have passed since you left this earth to make Heaven home. God bless the service you did while you were here and the legacy you left behind for others to follow in your footsteps. I miss you buddy. One glorious day we will catch up on old times. We will have eternity to do that!

I think of your family, friends and co workers today Anthony. Its been 4 years now since you and my brother were each taken from our families. I have had some emotions today and still hard to imagine that my brother is gone. Heidi and Cidy are both stron I know they are it was a real pleasure to "accidently" sit next to them at the 2004 candlelight vigil in Washington DC to get to meet them and just express sorrow to them for you. Continue watching over them Anthony and I want yo uand your family to know...You are a hero to more than he knows. ©2004

I woke up sad this morning then realized you have now been rejoicing in heaven for four years. God always seems to redirect my vision when I become overwhelmed with the loss. I'll see you again someday.

It is hard to believe it has been 4 years all ready. Seems like just yesterday we were hanging out at Morgan Place. I saw your Mom and Dad at the memorial service in Wilmington. They look good but I know how hard this has been on them. Take care and I'll see you someday.

Time continues to pass, as time must but you are still firmly in the hearts and minds of those who love you.May they, and you, be ever blessed.

It's hard to read these reflections to see how much you
were loved and respected and are missed. Life isn't fair, but I know Jesus will make it right some day. We just need to remember THIS IS NOT OUR HOME. THIS IS NOT ALL THERE IS. It's been 4 years. I'll always remember your name and look forward to meeting you in Paradise some day.
I love this Chris Rice song titled Untitled Hymn.

Weak and wounded sinner
Lost and left to die
O, raise your head, for love is passing by
Come to Jesus
Come to Jesus
Come to Jesus and live!

Now your burden's lifted
And carried far away
And precious blood has washed away the stain, so
Sing to Jesus
Sing to Jesus
Sing to Jesus and live!

And like a newborn baby
Don't be afraid to crawl
And remember when you walk
Sometimes we fall...so
Fall on Jesus
Fall on Jesus
Fall on Jesus and live!

Sometimes the way is lonely
And steep and filled with pain
So if your sky is dark and pours the rain, then
Cry to Jesus
Cry to Jesus
Cry to Jesus and live!

O, and when the love spills over
And music fills the night
And when you can't contain your joy inside, then
Dance for Jesus
Dance for Jesus
Dance for Jesus and live!

And with your final heartbeat
Kiss the world goodbye
Then go in peace, and laugh on Glory's side, and
Fly to Jesus
Fly to Jesus
Fly to Jesus and live!

Your memory is alive and well. Healing will only come
when those whose faith is in Christ will meet you on the
other side. Until then, we rejoice that you are with the
Savior and the cares of this earth are far from you!

I attended the memorial service in Raleigh today & it was beautiful. First time at the academy but Jody will be graduating June 21st so I have one more trip there. I sure wish he could've met you, I know you would've had lots of cadette stories to share. I etched your name from the memorial to put in my scrapbook & it is so pretty. I think of you often (w/a smile of course especially on holidays!) & can't believe it has been almost 4 years, but I know you are always here in spirit. Miss you!

I don't visit here often - when I do I sit and cry. I admire your Mom's courage and sense of humor, but I know there's a huge void in her life no one can fill and only God can soothe. As so many others have said - life here goes on and so does the hurt. You did all God had asked of you by age 32 and He allowed you to enter your rest. Your sacrificial heart is reflected in scholarships, memorials, golf tournaments, "Operation Cody", the move over law (which has been adopted in Texas also), and the many reflections here of quiet moments in your life when you touched others in a special way. One of my favorite movies is "It's A Wonderful Life" - - Like the character played by Jimmy Stewart, your path made a HUGE difference in your corner of the world. It's a rare human being that so blesses others. I can only hope that before I join you in heaven that one life will be enriched because I lived. Love never dies - yours still shines brightly here.
