Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Senior Trooper Anthony Greg Cogdill

Passed by your bridge today and thought I would leave a reflection. My brother lost his life two years ago after a foot chase, and my life will never be the same. I think of your family and friends and know that they too are feeling what I feel. Originally from WNC, my big brother always wanted to be a NC State Trooper. It was his dream. After the Marines, he ended up as an officer in the state of Virginia, but in his honor, I try to remember him by treating your fellow officers to sweet treats. Went by the Patrol office just this past week to treat your boys to some cookies. You will never be forgotten. Your memory is saving lives everyday. I thank you for your sacrifice and I want your family to know they too are not forgotten.

Watch over your family as they are precious... and if you see my big brother... tell him we love him and miss him like crazy.

"Perhaps they are not the stars, but rather openings in Heaven where the love of our lost ones pours through and shines down upon us to let us know they are happy."

I was sitting at the table tonight watching my son play. He is about the same age as Cody was when you were taken from us. It is amazing how much he reminds me of Cody, same blond hair, skinny as a rail, and loves being with his Daddy. It reminded me of the last time I saw you, when Cody was playing in your patrol car. I just hope my son never has too go through what Cody has. You can be sure I will not go down without a big fight!! Miss you dude.

Anthony,
I sit here tonite after 2nd shift hanging up the uniform for the evening. As I look across the room I see the 10-42 photo on the wall, with the etching of your name that I scratched off the fallen wall in DC at the bottom, I think where has the time gone? I still think of you everyday as I put that uniform on. As your classmates get together from time to time you still seem to be the topic of conversation. You will always be remembered! Your family will always be remembered and always have a friend in the patrol. Thanks for the friendship and the fun years! Chris

Well...it is three and one half years since you moved into your heavenly home and Thanksgiving is fast approaching. It always brings bittersweet to my life as I think of the time in Clemmons that you and I cooked the Thanksgiving meal together; as we shopped and laughed and shared how we could cook just like your memaw as long as we were willing to spend enough money. If I did not keep my mind centered on what a marvelous place you dwell in and how wonderful it is for you now, I would be swallowed up in grief. God in His marvelous grace and mercy always draws me back to the wonderous gift of eternal life with Him and surrounds me with a peace that surpasses earthly discription; yet He never erases the love and desire I feel to hear your voice or hold you close in a hug. I still miss you!

My thoughts are with your family. I drove over your bridge on my way home from visiting another family that lost an officer in the line of duty in Buncombe County. It's terrible that we have to meet nice people in this manner and that we have one thing in common, the loss of an officer. You are a true hero and heroes never die. Keep watch over your loved ones and those officers still out on patrol You will never be forgotten.

Anthony,
You never got a chance to meet me but I knew you. My dad saw and talk to everyday as you seemed to make a stop just to say hello to him at work in the "Gorge". I will never forget that horrable day. But now I want to thank you if it was for you I would never have a chance to got to school the scholarship your mother awarded me was one of the best gifts anyone has given me. I will hope to be able to repay you and your family one day. God Bless and once again THANK YOU FOR SERVICE.

It was my honor to be one of your Basic School Instructors. You were a model cadet and then an outstanding Trooper. Most importantly, you were well liked and respected by your class mates and instructors. I know that you are in a better place and are saving a place for the rest of us.

Trooper Anthony Cogdill,
I rode in the Police Unity Tour a few years ago, and met your wonderful Wife and Son. I will always hold near the picture I took with your family. Cody is such a cute kid, and he must be really big now!! I bet you are so proud of him.
Well, I saw your Memorial Bridge yesterday while traveling from Memphis to Portsmouth on I-40. Such beautiful mountains and winding roads!!! When I came across your name and saw the cross with "State Trooper" I thought of what a hero you are, and that I was blessed to be there at that particular time. I felt as though an angel was looking over me. Then, not too far down the road, another Memorial for another State Trooper Calvin Taylor.
You are my hero!!@!

Anthony - It is hard to believe that it has been 3 years since you were taken from your family and friends. I think of you and your family often. I know they miss you but I hope they find comfort knowing that they will see in the future in a better place. I was on my way to Gatlinburg last year and saw your memorial bridge. I had Philip pull over on the way home so I could take some pictures. It brought tears to my eyes and then a smile to my face. I am thankful that I met you and Heidi in 1998. We had some good times. I thank God everyday that you two were there for me when I needed a friend the most. I will never forget you coming in when Heidi was helping me pack up my stuff. You said "I am sorry that this happened to you" and gave me a hug. I am over that bad part of my past now and you will be glad to know that I have a wonderful man in my life who I hope will be my husband in the near future. His name is Philip and I know that you would like him. I will keep my memories of our friendship close at heart. I will never forget our good times in Clemmons, NC. God Bless!

In May of 1995, I was a criminal justice major at A-B Tech. One of our assingments was to do a ridealong with a law enforcement officer. My classmate Brian Frady did a ridealong on the same night I did with the Buncombe County Sheriff's Department, he rode with then-deputy Cogdill that night. My ridealong was with Jeff Hewitt, and it is hard to believe they are both gone now. Rest easy brothers, we will meet again.

I have had you on my mind alot lately and have even had a dream about you a few nights in a row. I still can't believe you are gone. I hadn't seen you or Mike in a very long time before you passed and have always regretted not making more of an effort to at least check in with you or even Mike during those years but we had all went different ways and I know that you knew we still thought about you down here in McDowell. You are missed so much.
