My heart felt sympathy goes out to the family of Officer Herring-Patrick and the entire Norfolk Police Department. I was fortunate enough to know Sheila, when she was a recruit at the police academy in Newport News. She was a leader among her peers, and her prior experience helped many of the young recruits in her class make it through the academy.

Sheila will be sorely missed by the entire law enforcement community. I will never forget her. May God bless her family, and watch over them during this time of grief.

Officer Herring-Patrick:
It isn't often where one can fulfill their dream of doing what they have always wanted to do. With the love and support from your family you did just that -- you became a police officer, part of a brotherhood. There are so many thoughts and prayers going out to you and your family today and I know it will only continue. You will truly never be forgotten.
You displayed tremendous courage and bravery, not only this morning, but every time you wore the uniform. Though I never got to know you, I know you wore it with pride.

My deepest sympathy to the family, friends, and neighbors of Officer Herring-Patrick.
