James M. Nelson
Sheriff James Nelson was shot and killed while looking for a suspect who had escaped from the state mental hospital. When Sheriff Nelson and a deputy spotted the man they stopped him. As Sheriff Nelson exited the patrol car he was shot in the head. The suspect also shot and wounded the other deputy. The man fled but was later shot by a posse.
Sheriff Nelson was survived by his wife and six children.
