K9 Odin was shot and killed while trying to apprehend a suspect at the 700 block of East 6th Street in Alton.

The suspect was wanted in connection with a shooting that occurred on the night of August 21, 2024. While trying to arrest him at 5:40 a.m., the suspect shot K9 Odin and his handler. Officers returned fire, killing the suspect.

K9 Odin was transported to Hawthorne Animal Hospital where he succumbed to his wounds. His handler is recovering from non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.

K9 Odin had served with the Alton Police Department for seven months.
