Shawn, I did not know you but know some of your family and know you protected the communities I grew up in. Thank you for your service. I grieve for your family, our friends, department, acquaintances, and the peace of Lake City. I grieve for your loss as well. You are a hero and that will never be forgotten. Reading these posts, I am in tears as I'm reminded of the larger family that exists for those who serve. So many lives touched by the sacrifices public servants make. Thank you to those far from SE MN but giving your support.
To the Schneider Family, know that you have the support of your close circle, as well as that which extends farther than the eye- you have the hope and strength of the city, county, state, nation, and abroad! Here is to you as we grieve at your side and look to tomorrow, that peace and happiness will again shine through one day. You will get through this. We all will.

His Judgment Day:
The officer stood and faced his God, Which must always come to pass. He hoped his shoes were shinning, Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, Officer, How shall I deal with you? Have you always turned the other cheek To my church have you been true?"
The officer squared his shoulder and said, "No, Lord, I guess I aint, Because those of us who carry badges can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays, And at times my talk was rough, And sometimes I've been violent Because the streets are tough.
But I never took a penny That wasn't mine to keep.. Though I worked a lot of overtime, when the bills got too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help Though at times I shook with fear. And sometimes, God forgive me, I've wept an unmanly tear.
I know I don't deserve a place among the people here. They never wanted me around except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here, Lord, it needn't be so grand. I never expected or had too much, But if you don't...I'll understand.
There was silence all around the throne, where the saints often trod. As the officer waited quietly for the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, Officer. You've borne your burdens well. Come walk a beat on heaven's streets, You've done your time in hell"

"The Final Inspection"
The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"
The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges
can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here,
Lord, It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.
There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

"When I hear the call of the pipes
And the tattoo of the drums as they echo in the hills,
I will come and
stand the line.
And you should know this,
That whether you stand with me or against me,
I will fight till death.
And if the Lord should decide to take me before you,
Then you should know this.
That my brothers and sons and my sisters and
daughters will pick up my sword and continue to
Stand the line.
For oppression, anarchy and evil shall not prevail,
As long as I,
stand the line
Today,
Let us remember those warriors
Who stood beside us,
Today,
Let us remember,
We carry their swords. "

I followed the news very carefully the day I heard you were shot. I followed along while we all hoped and prayed good news would come out of St. Mary's Hospital. I heard on the radio the night you passed away. I was heartbroken to say the least. RIP and I will think of you and all of the fallen officers. RIP.

My heart goes out to Shawn's wife, children, parents, family, friends and fellow officers. You all will be in my thoughts and prayers as you fast these difficult times, now and in the future. May you find comfort in knowing that you have a bigger "family" that is thinking of you and praying for you and in the good times and in the beautiful memories you all have shared. We lost our daughter, EOW 8/1/02, also killed by gunfire in Minneapolis, so we can understand your pain. Shawn's children can be forever proud of their daddy and I feel sadness for them knowing they will only hold him in their hearts and memories, not be held in his arms.
Officer Schneider will now be walking the heavenly beat with all the officers that have gone before him. Rest in peace. God Bless Shawn and his family.
