Dave's death is a terrible loss to our community. The incident occurred not far from the Eisenhower National Historic Site where I work. He died in the line of duty evidently protecting wildlife from illegal hunting. The morning after Dave was killed, on my way to work, I saw a magnificent live Whitetail Buck on our site that very well could have been the object of a poacher's shot near where the incident took place the night before. I'd like to think that buck owed his life to Dave's intervention.

Lucky enough to have retired, I read losses such as this with a very heavy heart. No matter the patch or badge the profession answers the call to serve. Officer Grove while answering that call gave us the ultimate sacrifice. Each time I read one of these I relive the pain of fallen friends and officers from other areas. My family sends our regrets to his family and department.

It is with great sadness that we learn of the loss of Officer Grove. These officers accept great risk in taking on the role of protecting our natural resources, knowing that most of the people they will engage are already armed, yet they do it selflessly. We appreciate the great sacrifice that Officer Grove and his family have made and offer our prayers.

For Wildlife Conservation Officer David Grove:

The game officer is a unique law officer. In Pennsylvania he or she is the product of a year of exhaustive conservation academy training, and usually also possesses a college degree. The game officer normally works alone. He or she confronts hunters and other people who inhabit the woods and who are usually armed. Most enounters are routine, and when arrest occurs it generally is the issuance of a citation or summons. On occasion and individual must be taken into custody. When resistance is encountered the game officer is usually not in view of many, if any, witnesses. Hence, the game officer's duty is exceptionally hazardous. We regret that our brother David would meet with one of the worst situations - a convicted felon who has served time in prison, not wishing to return there, and armed with a gun. David fought valiantly for his life though fate, it appears, has deemed that he would not survive. Thankfully, his killer has been apprehended and justice will follow.

We pray for David's family, friends, co-workers and all who care about him. May they be ready to reach-out to one another in the days ahead.

I am proud to render Conservation Officer David Grove a final salute.

Cpl. Ralph D. Fiorenza (Ret.)
