Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Ronald Wayne Ives

A Tribute to the Heroes Among Us

Dedicated to Emergency Response Personnel everywhere and F.A.M.I.L.Y.

Our hearts go out to you and your families. You’re in our thoughts and our prayers. Thank you just doesn’t seem like enough for men who are heroes when we need them, but invisible, ignored, and unappreciated when we don’t.

You rescue us, save our possessions, our lives and our families. You are the heroes among us. You are always there for us in the most traumatic moments of our lives. No matter when we call, we just expect that you will come and do whatever it takes to help us. Your selflessness and dedication are awe-inspiring. We show our appreciation with low pay, little respect, and indifference for the issues in your lives, most of the time. As young children, we want to grow up and be you until we get older and realize the risk isn’t worth the reward.

As outsiders, we envy you, secretly. You have benefits in your careers that our jobs just can’t provide. Your work is not the same old thing every day. You get the opportunity to be heroes every time you go to work. You obviously love what you do, and you’re a family. You have a oneness the rest of society longs for. You care about and support each other. You know each other’s families, share each other’s lives. The rest of us face life’s trials and tribulations alone. You are never alone. You have each other, always.

It is our loss not to know you better. This world, this country, your individual towns truly are better places because of you. To lose one of you is a great tragedy, an irreplaceable, immeasurable loss for society. We should be grateful for and to you, and honor you regularly for all you do for us day in and day out without a word of thanks or praise.

We should be ashamed of ourselves; and yet, you continue to do all you do for us in spite of our behavior, which speaks to the people you are. How many of us are willing to do a job knowing we may not go home at the end of the day?

Maybe one day in the future, you will be recognized for all you do with better pay, and the community support and respect you so richly deserve. Until then, hang tough together, and God Bless You and your families.

Ron,
I met you two years ago when you started your ride from CA to NY. I was immediately drawn to your great attitude towards life. You and I began a great friendship. I knew that I could always count on you for whatever I needed. Your dedication in helping with the Special Olympics Torch Run was unbelieveable! I was in a panic the week of the torch run because we had lost Officer Goodman and I didn't know how I could do it all. You told me not to worry that all would be fine and it was, thanks to you! Thank you for helping me always. I only hope that I could have honored you with the same. Ron, when the accident happened in my city (your city), I called you on your cell phone in a panic, I wanted you to call me back to let me know you were okay as you have done in the past. I can still hear your voice telling me that you are fine and maybe that is really you telling me that you will be okay now. God bless you Ron! And to your family...you will always be blessed and always in our prayers.

I didnt know Officer Ives, but in hearing everyone talk of him - I would have been lucky too. I know his love and caring will carry on with his comrads and family and friends. I have a daughter in law enforcement and a son that wants to be in law enforcement and I can only hope that they can leave as much behind as Officer Ives did. Thank you.

Ron,

Today was your memorial at the Epicenter. It was tough. It's still tough as I just watched the footage on the news. It's been a rough week. But today is especially hard. I watched the procession of motors enter the parking lot and of course could not help but think of the processions you took part in for fallen motor officers over the years. They were there for you Ron. Remembering. Showing unity.

We miss you badly. I have been waiting for this dream to stop. For me to wake up, and realize it was just a dream. I expect to see you again. Smiling, joking, laughing. This is tough Ron. I have never lost a friend before, let alone a fellow Deputy. Your brother asked the audience to take what we remember the best about you and try to emulate that. For me, I know what that is, and I thank you for that. I will do my best to take what I have learned from you and apply it with in.

You are the best Ron. I ask that you watch over all of us. We miss you. We love you. We remember you. Always.

Until we meet again.

Your friend.

I wrote this poem in memory of Ron. I hope you all enjoy it.

Ron Ives
"A Man"

A Man, a Son, a Brother, a Husband, a Dad
most of all a friend
A Man who cared and shared
always lending a helping hand
A Man who only knew to be happy and to laugh
had his life cut in half
A Man I did not know so well
only 43, barely made it "Over the Hill"
A Man so friendly was even liked by inmates in jail
always helping children up and down a bike trail
A Man full of happiness
did not deserve this
A Man who I have heard not one bad story about
could never yell, scream or shout
A Man who you may have only met once
has left a huge impact on everyone of us
A Man who always considered others
has left behind his family, a sister and two brothers
A Man highly respected by everyone he knew
loved each and everyone of you
A Man with an irresistible smile
loved to ride his police motorcycle
A Man who started the 9-11 memorial bike tour from here to ground zero
was looked up to by so many and to some a hero
A Man who ended his timeline
on the corner of Archibald and Baseline.
