Reflections for Trooper Philip Joseph Lamonaco

Donna,
It likes like Phil got the memo. The weather was beautiful. The rememberances of Phil were heartfelt as was the dedication of the men who tracked down his killers. You and your kids were terrific and inspirational ..... as always. And finally, the memorial is moving and majestic.
I am sure that Phil is resting in peace.

TROOPER LAMONACO,
I MUST TELL YOU, THIS IS A DAY THAT I WILL NEVER FORGET.
I WAS DOING A JOB IN ALLENTOWN THAT I SCHEDULED THIS MORNING SO I WOULD BE DONE IN TIME TO ATTEND THE SERVICE. IT RAN A LITTLE LATE, SO I HAD TO SCRAMBLE TO GET THERE. WHEN I ARRIVED, THE PARKING SPOT WAS FULL, SO I HAD TO PARK AT THE TRUCK STOP AND HIKE IT. I ARRIVED ABOUT TEN MINUTES LATE. I FEEL THIS IS A DISHONOR TO YOU, BUT I KNOW YOU UNDERSTAND.
I STOOD AMONG SO MANY PEOPLE, AND LISTENED SO INTENTLY TO THE SPEECHES. THE TURNOUT WAS GREAT. IT WAS SUCH AN HONOR TO BE AMONG ALL THOSE "IMPORTANT PEOPLE". COL. CLINTON PAGANO, COLONEL FUENTES, AND THE MANY OTHERS. THE SPEECHES WERE WONDERFUL. YOU WERE SO LOVED AND RESPECTED BY YOUR PEERS.
THEN YOUR FAMILY MEMBERS SPOKE. YOUR SISTER SPOKE, YOUR SON MIKE, WHO LOOKS QUITE "SHARP" IN HIS TROOPER UNIFORM, FOLLOWING IN YOUR FOOTSTEPS. AND SINCE LAURA COULDN'T BE THERE, A SPEECH WAS READ FOR HER. THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE SPEECH WAS HER TELLING EVERYONE OF THE LITTLE THINGS SHE REMEMBERS. I LET OUT A LITTLE CHUCKLE WHEN SHE TOLD EVERYONE HOW YOU WOULD HOLD A PIECE OF SPAGHETTI UP FOR THE DOG, AND ASK IF HE WANTED IT. THE DOG WOULD SHAKE HIS HEAD YES, AND YOU WOULD GIVE IT TO HIM.
THEN SARAH STOOD UP THERE SO PROUD, AND MADE A WONDERFUL SPEECH. SHE WAS SO STRONG. DID NOT SHED A TEAR. SHE TOLD ME TWO WEEKS AGO THAT SHE DIDN'T THINK SHE WOULD MAKE IT THROUGH WITHOUT CRYING. I'LL TELL YOU A SECRET. DURING HER SPEECH, SHE DIDN'T CRY, BUT I DID. JUST SEEING HER UP THERE, BEING SO BRAVE, WAS TOO MUCH FOR ME.
MRS. LAMONACO GAVE SUCH A HEARTWARMING SPEECH, AND WAS SO THANKFUL FOR ALL THE PEOPLE, AND ALL THE EFFORT THAT WENT INTO THIS. IT WAS A WONDERFUL SERVICE. THE SERVICE CONCLUDED WITH ONE OF YOUR BROTHER TROOPERS SINGING "LET THERE BE PEACE ON EARTH". I HAD A ROUGH TIME WITH THAT ALSO. HE HAD SUCH A BEAUTIFUL VOICE.
THEY THEN UNVEILED THE MEMORIAL, BUT UNFORTUNATELY, I COULDN'T MAKE IT DOWN THE STAIRS, DUE TO THE AMOUNT OF PEOPLE. AT THE CONCLUSION, WHEN YOUR FAMILY HIT THE TOP STEP, THE STATE POLICE HELICOPTER DID A FLYOVER. IT WAS UNEXPECTED TO ME, AND I THOUGHT, WHAT A TRIBUTE.
ON THE WAY TO THE CAR, I CAUGHT SARAHS EYE, AND SHE GAVE ME ONE OF HER HEARTWARMING HUGS. AND THEN THE MOMENT CAME THAT I WAITED 25 YEARS FOR. I MET MRS. LAMONACO. I CAN'T TELL YOU HOW GOOD THAT MADE ME FEEL. SARAH ASKED IF I WAS GOING TO THE MANOR, BUT UNFORTUNATELY, I COULDN'T MAKE IT THERE. I HAD TO RUN TO MT. OLIVE, PICK UP MY WIFE FROM WORK TO TAKE HER TO THE BANK. ALL THE WHILE I WAS CALCULATING IN MY MIND THE TIME. I KNEW I WOULD MAKE IT. I DROPPED MY WIFE BACK OFF AT WORK AND WENT BACK TO THE SITE FOR THE 4:17 CANDLE LIGHT VIGIL. IT WAS BEAUTIFUL. AND I WAITED FOR THAT MOMENT TO VIEW THE MEMORIAL. IT IS ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL! ALL I COULD THINK OF WAS HERE IS THIS EVERLASTING MONUMENT TO YOU, AND EVERYONE WHO PASSES THIS SITE, WILL NOW KNOW THAT THIS IS THE ROADWAY THAT TROOPER LAMONACO PATROLLED, AND THIS IS THE SPOT WHERE HE GAVE HIS LIFE IN SERVICE TO US.
I MUST TELL YOU, MY WIFE IS SO SORRY THAT SHE COULD NOT MAKE IT TODAY. WITH THE CHANGE IN THE SCHEDULE OF THE SERVICE, SHE WASN'T ABLE TO SWING IT. SHE MUST HAVE SAID 20 TIMES HOW SORRY SHE WAS. I TOLD HER YOU WOULD UNDERSTAND.
AND FINALLY, I WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT I WAS VERY HONORED TO BE A PART OF TODAY. SARAH, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALLOWING ME TO BE A PART OF THIS VERY SPECIAL DAY FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY. I WAS VERY HUMBLED AND HONORED.
EVERY TIME I PASS THIS SPOT, I WILL STOP AND HONOR YOU TROOPER LAMONACO.

25 YEARS TODAY. NEVER FORGOTTEN.

Phil, Donna, Sara, Laura and Mike,
Our thoughts and love go out to all of you on this day as you remember with love and pride the husband and father that was taken from you so tragically 25 years ago today. We're so sorry that we were not able to be in attendance but unfortunately there was something that had to be tended to. I hope you understand. We so wish we could have been there to see the beautiful memorial you helped create in Phil's memory and the hundreds of people who were with you to honor him. But as you know there is no bigger tribute to his life than the beautiful family that he reluctantly left behind and who have forged on in his name and honor. He would be so proud of all of you. We are so proud and honored to call you our friends. We love you all.

We just finished putting the flowers at the 2 signes and the blanket at the memorial and we are heading to dinner to have your favorite meal, pasta with gravy. I am so excited to see the turn out for you tommorrow yet I will be a hard day for me. It is so hard for me and I miss you so much that I can't begin to tell you. I will miss you everyday and I will miss you more as every day goes by. I love you and I hope you are proud of what so many people did for you to make this memorial so special. HI MY LOVE, I ONLY HOPE I CAN GET THROUGH THIS MESSAGE TO YOU....IT'S SO IMPORTANT....HOWEVER I HAVE NOT STOPPED CRYING....NOT BOO HOO, BUT TEARS ALL DAY EVERY DAY....NOT NECESSARILY BECAUSE I'M SAD...BUT AMAZED AND OVERWHELMED....YOU SEE WHY....
IT STARTED AS A THOUGHT, REMEMBER...THEN A WHISPER TO TWO GUYS...THAT WAS IN AUGUST...TODAY THERE IS A MEMORIAL

I ONLY HOPE I CAN HOLD MYSELF TOGETHER THAT DAY...TO SAY WHAT NEEDS TO BE SAID...RIGHT NOW I'M CHOKING BACK MY TEARS SO I CAN FINISH THIS....

BUT KNOW THAT YOUR FAMILY IS FINE...WE HAVE PULLED TOGETHER THROUGH MANY ROUGH SEAS, THIS IS A GOOD ONE AND THE CURRENTS WILL WASH UPON THE SANDS ONLY TO UNVEIL THE FOOTPRINTS OF YOUR LIFE...AND WHAT IT HAS MEANT TO SO MANY...
THE HARDEST FOR ME...AS HAS BEEN FOR 25 YEARS IS I MISS YOU SO MUCH....NOT THE ABSENCS OF A HUSBAND, BUT YOU....YOUR TOUCH, YOUR SMELL, YOUR WARMTH OF LOVE THAT YOU GENERATED TO ME AND WITH ME TO MAKE OUR HOME A SAFE AND LOVING ONE...THE BUILD THE FOUNDATION OF OUR LITTLE FAMILY TO BECOME THE PROUD TALL CHILDREN THEY ALL ARE TODAY....THIS IS BECAUSE OF YOU...I ONLY KEPT IT GOING...YOU GAVE ME THE LOVE THAT NOT MANY HAVE HAD...THE TRUE GENIUNE LOVE THAT FRIENDS HAVE....

IF I TOOK A WRONG PATH, AND AS YOU KNOW I HAVE WALKED MANY....SOMEHWERE YOU HAVE SENT ME A SIGN OF THE RIGHT TURN TO TAKE....I ONLY HOPE THROUGH MY PAST 25 YEARS I HAVE MADE YOU PROUD OF ME...BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT MATTERS TO ME....I CAN LAY MY HEAD EACH NIGHT WITH PEACE....KNOWING I WILL SEE YOU AGAIN...

I HAVE KICKED BUTT WHEN NEEDED AND I WILL CONTINUE TO KICK BUTT....BUT THIS THURSDAY MY LOVE IS FOR YOU....I HAVE DONE IT ALL FOR YOU...BECAUSE I LOVE YOU AS MUCH NOW AS I DID THE DAY YOU TOOK MY HAND ON APRIL 1, 1972 AND SAID, "AND PRECIOUS-YOU'RE COMING WITH ME".

SO TILL I TALK WITH YOU TONIGHT....YOU CAN REST IN PEACE....AND AS YOU WATCH OVER THURSDAY....REFLECT ON THOSE THAT HAVE TRAVELED MANY A MILE....JUST FOR YOU....

To the Lamonaco Family,

It's very difficult to believe that it's been twenty-five years since Phil's murder. That was a terrible time in law enforcement, particularly in the New York-New Jersey metropolitan area. In fact, almost a year to the day before Phil's death, another Roselle Park native, Bill Perry, an Officer with the Port Authority PD was gunned down on a PATH train. Having been a police officer in Union County, and a Secret Service agent at the time, I remember very well the sense of disbelief and dismay we all felt having gone to two funerals within a year, almost to the day, of officers from Union County.

I knew Phil both on and off the job, and even before he became a Trooper. There was nobody in the law enforcement community that could hold a candle to his love of the job or his dedication to duty, plus he was an all around great guy.

I know that this month is a difficult time for all of you, and that there is little that anyone can say to ease the pain associated with Phil's death; but please remember that he, and you, are always in the thoughts and prayers of those who knew him.

MRS LAMONACO AND SARAH,
HAVE YOU HEARD? ANOTHER SLAP IN THE FACE TO A FALLEN OFFICER. PHILADELPHIA POLICE OFFICER DANIEL FAULKNER, EOW 12/9/1981.
HIS KILLER APPARENTLY HAS MANY WRITINGS AND TAPED SPEECHES ON OUR JUSTICE SYSTEM. YEAH, ANOTHER ONE. HE IS BELIEVED TO BE A "VICTIM OF A RACIST JUSTICE SYSTEM". CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS?
LIKE THE COWARD THAT HE IS, HE SHOOTS A POLICE OFFICER 4 TIMES IN THE BACK, WHILE HE'S ATTEMPTING TO TAKE SOMEONE INTO CUSTODY, THEN STANDS OVER HIM AND SHOOTS HIM IN THE FACE. THE OFFICER WAS ABLE TO RETURN FIRE BEFORE EXPIRING. THE SUSPECT STAGGERS AWAY AND COLLAPSES. WHEN BACK-UP OFFICERS ARRIVE, THEY FIND THE SUSPECT ON THE GROUND WITH THE MURDER WEAPON STILL IN HIS HAND. AND HE'S A VICTIM. HE'S A STONE COLD KILLER, NOTHING MORE, NOTHING LESS.
AFTER ALL THAT, DURING THE MONTH OF THE 25th ANNIVERSARY OF OFFICER FAULKNERS SACRIFICE, THE CITY OF ST. DENIS, FRANCE, HONORS THIS COP KILLER BY NAMING A STREET AFTER HIM!!!
THANKS TO CONGRESSMAN MIKE FITZPATRICK OF PENNSYLVANIA, THE HOUSE PASSED A RESOLUTION DENOUNCING THE CITY.
WHEN I READ THIS, MY FIRST THOUGHTS WERE OF YOU AND SARAH, AND WHAT YOU JUST WENT THROUGH WITH MANNING. IT IS UNBELIEVABLE WHAT GOES ON WITH THESE PEOPLE, THEIR ART, THEIR BOOKS AND ELIGIBLE TO BE INMATE OF THE MONTH IN NJDOC. IT'S ALMOST FUNNY, BUT AT THE SAME TIME, IT SICKENS ME.
KEEP UP YOUR WORK FOR THE CAUSE. YOU ARE VERY MUCH ADMIRED. I WILL SEE YOU ON THE 21st, TO HONOR YOU, YOUR FAMILY AND HERO HUSBAND AND FATHER.

Although I was not alive when the world lost the Trooper and man that is eternally Philip Joseph Lamonaco, I am proud to be from the same Borough as he was. My family attended high school with members of the Lamonaco family, and one particular of my family greeted Trooper Lamonaco at her bank almost daily. Everyone describes the Officer and the man as the same; courteous, kind, caring, dedicated, and intelligent. I am proud to say a small prayer every time I pass the Lamonaco-Perry memorial here in our hometown, as well as the site on I-80. I have no doubt that your spirit, Trooper Lamonaco, lives on; because your memory always will.

God bless you, and your family.

TROOPER LAMONACO,
I WENT TO SEE SARAH AGAIN FOR A HAIRCUT, AND MY WIFE DID ALSO. MY WIFE IS SO VERY HAPPY WITH THE CUT SARAH GAVE HER, AND SHE HAS GOTTEN SO MANY COMPLIMENTS. I WAS EVEN MORE HAPPY THIS TIME ALSO. YOUR DAUGHTER IS ONE GREAT HAIR STYLIST! I AM SO HAPPY TO HAVE MET HER.
SARAH INVITED ME TO THE MEMORIAL SERVICE PLANNED FOR THE 21st OF DECEMBER. I AM SO HONORED THAT SHE THOUGHT OF ME IN THAT WAY. I WILL MOST CERTAINLY BE THERE TO HONOR YOU, AND YOUR FAMILY. MY WIFE WORKS 9 TO 5 NORMALLY, BUT THAT DAY, SHE WILL WORK 6 TO 2, SO THAT SHE MAY ATTEND. WE WOULDN'T MISS IT FOR ANYTHING. SARAH, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALLOWING US THE HONOR OF ATTENDING.
I HAVE HAD THREE OCCASSIONS THAT I HAD TO PASS THROUGH KNOWLTON TOWNSHIP IN THE PAST COUPLE OF WEEKS. I HAVE TAKEN ROUTE 46 INSTEAD OF I-80, SO THAT I WOULD NOT PASS THE SPOT. I WANT TO SAVE THAT FOR THE SPECIAL DAY OF DECEMBER 21st, 2006, THE DAY THAT THE MEMORIAL WILL BE HELD IN YOUR HONOR, ON THE 25th ANNIVERSARY OF YOUR SACRIFICE FOR US. ON THAT DAY, I WILL MEET YOUR WIFE, WHOM I HAVE THOUGHT OF SO OFTEN AND HONORED FOR HER COURAGE FOR 25 YEARS.

Hi Dad,
How are you doing? I can't believe it is December already. I went to your site the other day to see the finished project. Dad it is amazing, they all did such a great job. We drove past it on the other side of the road and it is huge. There is no way that people will ever forget about you. In a strange way it is peaceful there. I am glad that there is a place for all of us to take our kids and their kids. I miss you dad. I am not sure how I am going to get through this, each year gets harder for me. I just miss you yet I am proud of you. I love you daddy and I will forever. Talk to you tonight
Love always

A Tribute to Trooper Phillip Lamonaco

To the Lamonaco family:

I am the son of a NJ State Trooper, Sgt. David Mathis #2754, who – now retired – was a contemporary of Trooper Phillip Lamonaco. I recall the events of Trooper Lamonaco's death well, though I was a child at the time. I remember dwelling at length on the possibility that it could happen to my father too. Few other professions in our world run such a risk. But with this risk comes the honor of serving a noble calling.

Later, I was a recipient of the scholarship established in the name of Trooper Lamonaco. Thanks in large part to the fact that the scholarship helped me attend college, the door was opened to many things in my life that would not otherwise have been possible. For example, I was later fortunate enough to attend Harvard Business School, and now I serve as the Chief Operating Officer of a mid-sized technology company. I owe much of this to the Trooper Phillip Lamonaco scholarship, and I remain grateful for it every day.

More importantly, I think of the example set by men such as Trooper Lamonaco, and my father. They are our true heros, and I have done my best to live up to the standard they have set in courage, devotion to duty and sacrifice. Though I chose a career in business, I also serve in the Navy, an officer on reserve duty. Not only were the brave actions and outstanding service of Trooper Lamonaco in keeping with the highest traditions of the New Jersey State Police, they are an inspiration for all of us who wear a uniform in the service of this nation.

I now have children who are close to the ages that the Lamonaco children were at the time of Trooper Lamonaco’s death in the line of duty. I have also lost comrades-in-arms in the military service, people I served with when I was mobilized in the current fight against terrorism. Maybe it is because of these factors that I have been thinking of Trooper Lamonaco a lot recently. And I wanted you to know that his service and his sacrifice continue to have an influence on me many years after the fact. Trooper Lamonaco continues to be an inspiration for me. He always will be. Please know that he did not die in vain, and that there are people out there – I am one of them – that draw encouragement and inspiration from the life he led, and the duty he performed. I am humbled to have benefited from him in so many ways.

With deepest respect,

LT Donald H. Mathis, USN (RC)

In 1991 Sonny Grosso and CBS produced an episode of "TOP COPS" dedicated to LEO's who died in the line of duty. At that time I met Donna and your three great kids as I was at the set to help tell Tony Dwyer's story. This week on Tony's anniverssary in heaven I was at the NJSP Survivor's of the Triangle event and Tony was remembered and honored along with you and your brother Troopers. Say hello to him up there .... he was a Times Square footman and you were a west Jersey road Troper ... so you should have a lot in common. LOL. Seriously, you ARE ONE IN THE SAME, GREAT COPS FROM GREAT FAMILIES. I did not know you but judging by Donna and Laura, Michael (NJSP) and Sarah you were a great Trooper and a greater man.

I am terribly sorry for your loss, my heart goes out to you. I can't even put my thoughts into words, there are so many sad feelings when an Officer is killed in the line of duty. I give Trooper Lamonaco all the respect in the world. I hope the two jerks involved in the killing rot in hell!

TROOPER LAMONACO,
THROUGHOUT THE YEARS SINCE SINCE YOU GAVE YOUR LIFE IN SERVICE TO US, I HAVE FOLLOWED ALL THE "GOINGS ON". I FOLLOWED THE CAPTURE AND TRIAL OF YOUR KILLER, AND REJOICED WHEN HE WAS FOUND GUILTY. I WAS UPSET THAT HE WAS ALLOWED TO LIVE OUT HIS LIFE IN PRISON, AT OUR EXPENSE. HOWEVER, THAT IS OUR SYSTEM, AND WE MUST LIVE WITH IT.
MANY YEARS PASSED, AND I WOULD SOMEHOW ALWAYS SEE SOMETHING IN THE PAPER THAT MRS. LAMONACO WAS DOING. SHE IS SUCH A STRONG WOMAN. EVERYBODY KNOWS HOW PROUD YOU ARE OF HER.
I WAS VISITING MY SISTER IN VIRGINIA ONE WEEKEND ABOUT A YEAR AND A HALF AGO, WHEN I READ AN ARTICLE IN THE WASHINGTON POST ABOUT THIS SITE. WHEN I RETURNED HOME, I WENT ON THE SITE, AND ONE OF THE FIRST NAMES I LOOKED UP WAS YOURS. I FOUND SO MANY REFLECTIONS FROM MRS LAMONACO AND SARAH, AND CRIED AS I WAS READING THEM. YOUR GIRLS ARE SO STRONG! I RETURNED TO THE SITE MANY TIMES, JUST TO SEE WHAT THEY HAD WRITTEN.
I FOLLOWED SARAHS' PROGRESS THROUGH SCHOOL AND HER PASSING OF THE STATE BOARDS AS SHE WAS WRITING TO YOU. I ASKED IF SHE WOULD ALLOW ME TO COME TO HER FOR A HAIRCUT. SHE GOT MY EMAIL ADDRESS FROM ODMP AND WROTE TO ME. I WAS QUITE SURPRISED AND HAPPY.
WELL, TODAY, I WENT FOR A HAIRCUT. SIR, IT WAS AN HONOR TO HAVE YOUR DAUGHTER CUT MY HAIR. AND SHE DID A GREAT JOB. I WILL CERTAINLY BE RECOMMENDING HER TO EVERYONE I KNOW.
I AM SO PROUD TO SAY THAT I HAVE MET SARAH. I HAVE THOUGHT OF AND PRAYED FOR HER, AND HER MOM, FOR ALMOST 25 YEARS. I STILL CAN'T BELIEVE THAT I HAVE MET HER.
YOU WOULD BE SO PROUD OF HER. SHE IS A BEAUTIFUL YOUNG LADY, WITH A PERSONALITY TO MATCH. AND THERE IS NO DOUBT WHO HER DADDY IS. SHE IS THE IMAGE OF YOU.
I WILL CLOSE HERE, AND WISH YOU THE BEST. I KNOW YOU ARE BUSY WITH ALL THE PEOPLE YOU HAVE TO WATCH OVER. IF YOU WOULD, PLEASE TAKE A MOMENT AND SEEK OUT TWO OFFICERS AND TELL THEM "HEY" FOR ME. RICHARD HUERTA, SAN JOSE, CALIF PD AND TONY GARAFFA, IRVINGTON, NJ PD.
