Reflections for Trooper II Philip Joseph Lamonaco

TROOPER LAMONACO,
I WENT TO SEE SARAH AGAIN FOR A HAIRCUT, AND MY WIFE DID ALSO. MY WIFE IS SO VERY HAPPY WITH THE CUT SARAH GAVE HER, AND SHE HAS GOTTEN SO MANY COMPLIMENTS. I WAS EVEN MORE HAPPY THIS TIME ALSO. YOUR DAUGHTER IS ONE GREAT HAIR STYLIST! I AM SO HAPPY TO HAVE MET HER.
SARAH INVITED ME TO THE MEMORIAL SERVICE PLANNED FOR THE 21st OF DECEMBER. I AM SO HONORED THAT SHE THOUGHT OF ME IN THAT WAY. I WILL MOST CERTAINLY BE THERE TO HONOR YOU, AND YOUR FAMILY. MY WIFE WORKS 9 TO 5 NORMALLY, BUT THAT DAY, SHE WILL WORK 6 TO 2, SO THAT SHE MAY ATTEND. WE WOULDN'T MISS IT FOR ANYTHING. SARAH, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALLOWING US THE HONOR OF ATTENDING.
I HAVE HAD THREE OCCASSIONS THAT I HAD TO PASS THROUGH KNOWLTON TOWNSHIP IN THE PAST COUPLE OF WEEKS. I HAVE TAKEN ROUTE 46 INSTEAD OF I-80, SO THAT I WOULD NOT PASS THE SPOT. I WANT TO SAVE THAT FOR THE SPECIAL DAY OF DECEMBER 21st, 2006, THE DAY THAT THE MEMORIAL WILL BE HELD IN YOUR HONOR, ON THE 25th ANNIVERSARY OF YOUR SACRIFICE FOR US. ON THAT DAY, I WILL MEET YOUR WIFE, WHOM I HAVE THOUGHT OF SO OFTEN AND HONORED FOR HER COURAGE FOR 25 YEARS.

TROOPER LAMONACO, NEVER FORGOTTEN.

Hi Dad,
How are you doing? I can't believe it is December already. I went to your site the other day to see the finished project. Dad it is amazing, they all did such a great job. We drove past it on the other side of the road and it is huge. There is no way that people will ever forget about you. In a strange way it is peaceful there. I am glad that there is a place for all of us to take our kids and their kids. I miss you dad. I am not sure how I am going to get through this, each year gets harder for me. I just miss you yet I am proud of you. I love you daddy and I will forever. Talk to you tonight
Love always

A Tribute to Trooper Phillip Lamonaco

To the Lamonaco family:

I am the son of a NJ State Trooper, Sgt. David Mathis #2754, who – now retired – was a contemporary of Trooper Phillip Lamonaco. I recall the events of Trooper Lamonaco's death well, though I was a child at the time. I remember dwelling at length on the possibility that it could happen to my father too. Few other professions in our world run such a risk. But with this risk comes the honor of serving a noble calling.

Later, I was a recipient of the scholarship established in the name of Trooper Lamonaco. Thanks in large part to the fact that the scholarship helped me attend college, the door was opened to many things in my life that would not otherwise have been possible. For example, I was later fortunate enough to attend Harvard Business School, and now I serve as the Chief Operating Officer of a mid-sized technology company. I owe much of this to the Trooper Phillip Lamonaco scholarship, and I remain grateful for it every day.

More importantly, I think of the example set by men such as Trooper Lamonaco, and my father. They are our true heros, and I have done my best to live up to the standard they have set in courage, devotion to duty and sacrifice. Though I chose a career in business, I also serve in the Navy, an officer on reserve duty. Not only were the brave actions and outstanding service of Trooper Lamonaco in keeping with the highest traditions of the New Jersey State Police, they are an inspiration for all of us who wear a uniform in the service of this nation.

I now have children who are close to the ages that the Lamonaco children were at the time of Trooper Lamonaco’s death in the line of duty. I have also lost comrades-in-arms in the military service, people I served with when I was mobilized in the current fight against terrorism. Maybe it is because of these factors that I have been thinking of Trooper Lamonaco a lot recently. And I wanted you to know that his service and his sacrifice continue to have an influence on me many years after the fact. Trooper Lamonaco continues to be an inspiration for me. He always will be. Please know that he did not die in vain, and that there are people out there – I am one of them – that draw encouragement and inspiration from the life he led, and the duty he performed. I am humbled to have benefited from him in so many ways.

With deepest respect,

LT Donald H. Mathis, USN (RC)

Phil-
In 1991 Sonny Grosso and CBS produced an episode of "TOP COPS" dedicated to LEO's who died in the line of duty. At that time I met Donna and your three great kids as I was at the set to help tell Tony Dwyer's story. This week on Tony's anniverssary in heaven I was at the NJSP Survivor's of the Triangle event and Tony was remembered and honored along with you and your brother Troopers. Say hello to him up there .... he was a Times Square footman and you were a west Jersey road Troper ... so you should have a lot in common. LOL. Seriously, you ARE ONE IN THE SAME, GREAT COPS FROM GREAT FAMILIES. I did not know you but judging by Donna and Laura, Michael (NJSP) and Sarah you were a great Trooper and a greater man.
Rest easy,

To The Lamonaco Family:

I am terribly sorry for your loss, my heart goes out to you. I can't even put my thoughts into words, there are so many sad feelings when an Officer is killed in the line of duty. I give Trooper Lamonaco all the respect in the world. I hope the two jerks involved in the killing rot in hell!

TROOPER LAMONACO,
THROUGHOUT THE YEARS SINCE SINCE YOU GAVE YOUR LIFE IN SERVICE TO US, I HAVE FOLLOWED ALL THE "GOINGS ON". I FOLLOWED THE CAPTURE AND TRIAL OF YOUR KILLER, AND REJOICED WHEN HE WAS FOUND GUILTY. I WAS UPSET THAT HE WAS ALLOWED TO LIVE OUT HIS LIFE IN PRISON, AT OUR EXPENSE. HOWEVER, THAT IS OUR SYSTEM, AND WE MUST LIVE WITH IT.
MANY YEARS PASSED, AND I WOULD SOMEHOW ALWAYS SEE SOMETHING IN THE PAPER THAT MRS. LAMONACO WAS DOING. SHE IS SUCH A STRONG WOMAN. EVERYBODY KNOWS HOW PROUD YOU ARE OF HER.
I WAS VISITING MY SISTER IN VIRGINIA ONE WEEKEND ABOUT A YEAR AND A HALF AGO, WHEN I READ AN ARTICLE IN THE WASHINGTON POST ABOUT THIS SITE. WHEN I RETURNED HOME, I WENT ON THE SITE, AND ONE OF THE FIRST NAMES I LOOKED UP WAS YOURS. I FOUND SO MANY REFLECTIONS FROM MRS LAMONACO AND SARAH, AND CRIED AS I WAS READING THEM. YOUR GIRLS ARE SO STRONG! I RETURNED TO THE SITE MANY TIMES, JUST TO SEE WHAT THEY HAD WRITTEN.
I FOLLOWED SARAHS' PROGRESS THROUGH SCHOOL AND HER PASSING OF THE STATE BOARDS AS SHE WAS WRITING TO YOU. I ASKED IF SHE WOULD ALLOW ME TO COME TO HER FOR A HAIRCUT. SHE GOT MY EMAIL ADDRESS FROM ODMP AND WROTE TO ME. I WAS QUITE SURPRISED AND HAPPY.
WELL, TODAY, I WENT FOR A HAIRCUT. SIR, IT WAS AN HONOR TO HAVE YOUR DAUGHTER CUT MY HAIR. AND SHE DID A GREAT JOB. I WILL CERTAINLY BE RECOMMENDING HER TO EVERYONE I KNOW.
I AM SO PROUD TO SAY THAT I HAVE MET SARAH. I HAVE THOUGHT OF AND PRAYED FOR HER, AND HER MOM, FOR ALMOST 25 YEARS. I STILL CAN'T BELIEVE THAT I HAVE MET HER.
YOU WOULD BE SO PROUD OF HER. SHE IS A BEAUTIFUL YOUNG LADY, WITH A PERSONALITY TO MATCH. AND THERE IS NO DOUBT WHO HER DADDY IS. SHE IS THE IMAGE OF YOU.
I WILL CLOSE HERE, AND WISH YOU THE BEST. I KNOW YOU ARE BUSY WITH ALL THE PEOPLE YOU HAVE TO WATCH OVER. IF YOU WOULD, PLEASE TAKE A MOMENT AND SEEK OUT TWO OFFICERS AND TELL THEM "HEY" FOR ME. RICHARD HUERTA, SAN JOSE, CALIF PD AND TONY GARAFFA, IRVINGTON, NJ PD.

REST IN PEACE MY FRIEND. GONE BUT NEVER FORGOTTEN

MRS. LAMONACO AND SARAH,
I JUST GOT DONE READING THE ARTICLE IN TODAYS STAR LEDGER. I CANNOT BELIEVE THIS. THERE WAS ACTUALLY GOING TO BE A PRESENTATION OF THIS SCUMS ART. THIS IS AN OUTRAGE. BUT, ONCE AGAIN, MRS LAMONACOS' VOICE WAS HEARD. I JUST CAN'T BELIEVE IT WOULD EVEN BE CONSIDERED IN THE FIRST PLACE. THIS GUY SHOULDN'T EVEN BE ALLOWED TO BREATHE, MUCH LESS DRAW OR PAINT, OR WHATEVER IT IS HE DOES. AND THIS "POLITICAL PRISONER" B.S. IT SICKENS ME. HE'S A STONE COLD MURDERER, AND NOTHING ELSE. HE'S NOT EVEN "WHERE HE BELONGS". HE SHOULD BE BURNING IN HELL, NOT LIVING AT OUR EXPENSE IN PRISON.
MRS. LAMONACO, I KNOW IT TAKES ABOUT EVERY OUNCE OF YOUR STRENGTH TO DO WHAT YOU DO. BUT THANK GOD YOU DO.
SARAH, I'M ALMOST DUE FOR A CUT, SO I'LL BE IN TOUCH VIA EMAIL TO SET IT UP.
TAKE GOOD CARE. I THINK OF YOU FOLKS OFTEN

HI MY LOVE, ALL I CAN SAY IS "THANK YOU". I KNOW IT WAS YOU AND YOUR ANGELS THAT HELPED TO MAKE THIS ALL HAPPEN THE WAY IT DID. I HAD JUST FINISHED MAKING CHANGES IN MY FLIGHT TO WISCONSIN FOR THE GREEN BAY GAME WITH SUE WHEN I RECEIVED THE CALL ABOUT THE "VICTORY GARDEN SOMETHING" THAT WAS HAVE THE ART GALLERY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN MAINE. IT WAS CALLED "POLITICAL PRISONS" AND THE SKETCHINGS, DRAWINGS, AND SELF PORTRAIT WERE ALL DONE BY YOU GUESSED IT. THOMAS MANNING. IT'S BETTER HON, THE 15TH OF SEPT THEY WERE HAVE LEVASURE AS THE GUEST SPEAKER. I SWORE I WOULD NOT LET THIS HAPPEN WITHOUT ALL MY ENERGY AND STRENGTH TO STOP IT. SO I CHANGED MY FLIGHT PLANS AND I'M ARRIVING IN MAINE ON FRIDAY.
THIS AFTERNOON I GET THE PHONE CALL FROM PAUL, GEORGE AND BOB UP IN MAINE THAT THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNIVERSITY HAS PULLED THE WHOLE PROGRAM. THEY ALL HEARD ABOUT THE GATHERING OF LAW ENFORCEMENT FROM ALL OVER, THE LETTERS OFOF ANGER AND PROTEST AND THAT I WAS COMING UP.

HE PULLED THE WHOLE SHOW, DO YOU BELIEVE IT? OF COURSE YOU DO YOU AND YOUR ANGELS WERE RIGHT THERE FIGHTING WITH ME.

HONEY I LOVE YOU SO MUCH AND MISS YOU EVEN MORE. I HAVE TO ADMIT I WAS A LITTLE CONCERNED, BUT WITH MY LAST DYING BREATH I WAS GOING TO STOP THIS, AND IT HAPPENED.

I'M STILL GOING TO MAINE TO SEE EVERYONE AND PERSONALLY THANK THEM AND I WILL BE SENDING LETTERS TO ALL THE STATES WHO HELPED WITH THIS. HONEY THAT HAVEN'T FORGOTTEN YOU AND AS LONG AS I'M ALIVE THEY NEVER WILL. NO ONE WILL SPIT ON MY BABY AND GET AWAY WITH IT.

POITICAL PRISONERS MY -SS, THEY ARE COMMON LAW CRIMINALS, MURDERERS AND NOTHING MORE. AND WILL NOT ADVOCATE THEIR MURDEROUS UNCONSTITUTIONAL POWERS ON MY COUNTRY.

GOD BLESS YOU MY LOVE, UNTIL I SEE YOU IN MY DREAMS......
I LOVE YOU

Donna,

I finally got to see Phil's story on the FBI Files on Discovery Channel. I accidently came across it while channel surfing. My heart broke for you and your family all over again. You are such a brave woman who is a role model to so many other women. God Bless you for your untiring efforts to try and make the way a little easier for those who have lost loved ones. Thank you for all you have done for my family especially Denise.

HI MY SWEETHEART, HAVEN'T TALKED TO YOU IN AWHILE. BUSY MONTH WHICH IS WHY I GUESS IT'S GOING FAST. HAD ANOTHER OFFICER KILLED, A DET WITH ORANGE PD. SAD EMOTIONAL FOR ME AS WELL. DIDN'T GO ON THE INITIAL CALL BECAUSE THAT'S WHEN SARAH AN DI WERE IN PT PLEASANT, BY THE WAY WHAT A GREAT 4 DAY VACATION AND BIRTHDAY PRESENT. WE WENT TO SEASIDE AND I TOOK HER PAST YOUR OLD HOUSE AND ON THE BOARDWALK WHERE WE USE TO GO ALL THE TIME. BOY THAT MADE ME MISS YOU SO SO MUCH. BUT I'M SO THANKFUL FOR THOSE MNEMORIES.
ANYWAY, THE ORANGE DET WAS 32, HAD THREE CHILDREN 1 GIRL ABOUT 8, 1 GIRL ABOUT 6 AND A 5 MONTH OLD BOY, SOUND FAMILIAR. I WAS CALLED OUT TO ONE OF RELATIVES WHICH I KNOW YOU KNOW, THANKS FOR YOUR PRAYERS I KNEW YOU HAD MY BACK. THE VIEWING AND FUNERAL WELL SAD, BUT AREN'T THEY ALL.

ANYWAY, GOT CALLED INTO WORK LAST NIGHT ABOUT 8:30 WAS WATCHING PRE SEASON GIANTS WINNING 7-0 OVER CHIEFS WHEN WE HAD A BLACK FEMALE WITH STOLEN VEHICLE AND ON DRUGS. GOT HOME AT 2:00 BUT COULDN'T SLEEP BECAUSE OF MY COFFEE. OH YEAH YOUR SON HAD TO STOP IN THIS MOTNING AS I WAS LEAVING FOR WORK TO BUST MY CHOPS A LITTLE. HE HEARD WE BROUGHT HER DOWN TO THE NJ STATION IN WASHINGTON FOR DIGITAL FINGERPRINTING. SO HE HAD TO YOU KNOW MICHAEL.

ANYWAY, JUST THINKING ABOUT YOU LOT'S. TOMORROW IS OUR PICNIC NOT SURE HOW MANY ARE COMING NOT MANY REPLIES. DON'T THINK I'LL DO THIS AGAIN, SP ALL SAY THEY WANT TO COME AND I GO WAY OUT AND NOT ALL SHOW UP.

SO MY BOOK IS COMING ALONG, IT WILL TAKE A WHILE I NEED TO WORK WITH EITHER PAUL THE AGENT OR MAYBE A WRITER. SINCE I WON'T HAVE IT OUT FOR YOUR 25 ANNIVERSARY, I'M NOT RUSHING. I WANT IT RIGHT AND GOOD AND HELPFUL. BY THE WAY HONEY, KEEP THE PRAYERS COMING FOR ME AND THE AGENT AND PUBLISHER AND WRITER I GUESS. THIS MEANS SO MUCHN TO ME I WANT IT TO BE GOOD.

LOVE YOU TALK TO YOU TONIGHT.

I was in college back in 1991 when I first heard the story of you and your fight against crime through a movie that was televised nationally. Even now, almost 25 years after you left us, people have never forgotten you and what you stood for as one of New Jersey's finest. You were one of the best at what you did and I'm sure paved the way for younger Trooper's by example of dedication and leadership. Reading your daughter Sarah's reflections brings a great deal of sadness just thinking of how many holidays, birthday's, graduation's, etc., she and the rest of your family had to spend without you. However, looking at all of the reflections you have received and knowing the reputation you had makes be believe that you are remembered more for the way you lived and not the way you left us. Rest easy sir, your brother and sister Trooper's across the bridge will never forget you!

HI SARAH,
CONGRATULATIONS! YOU DID IT! PASSED THE STATE BOARDS.
I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO BE A CLIENT OF YOURS, IF YOU WOULDN'T MIND. YOU CAN EITHER POST HERE WHERE YOU WORK, OR IF YOU CONTACT ODMP THEY WILL GIVE ME YOUR EMAIL SO I CAN CONTACT YOU AND FIND OUT.
IT WOULD BE SUCH AN HONOR TO MEET YOU, AND SHARE SOME STORIES.
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK, AND CONTINUE TO HONOR YOUR DAD AS YOU DO. HE WAS A GREAT TROOPER. I DID NOT KNOW HIM, BUT HAVE HEARD AND READ SO MUCH ABOUT HIM. THEY SAY HE HAD A SIXTH SENSE FOR DRUG RUNNERS ON THE HIGHWAYS.
HOPE TO HEAR FROM YOU SOON.

Hi Dad- I cant believe that summer is almost over, where did it go? This weekend I took Mommy to the shore for her Birthday. We had so much fun, we went to the beach, out to dinner, walked on the boardwalk, and I even saw your old shore house in Seaside. It was so cute we went on the Seaside boardwalk Mommy told me all about when you and her would go and how you eat clams for hours, now I know where I get that from. She really missed you, you were on her mind the whole walk, but it was good thoughts. We had a good time. I am so tired so I am going to go I just wanted to say hi and tell you that I love you!!!! talk to you later.

I think of you and your family often and like many others stop and talk to you on route 80 severals times a year. God bless. You will never be forgotten.
