A Part of America Died

Somebody killed a policeman today
And a part of America died…
A piece of our country he swore to protect
Will be buried with him at his side.
The beat that he walked was a battlefield, too,
Just as if he had gone off to war;
Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half-mast
To his name they will add a gold star.
The suspect that shot him will stand up in court
With counsel demanding his rights,
While a young widowed mother must work for her kids
And spend many long, lonely nights.
Yes, somebody killed a policeman today…
Maybe in your town or mine,
While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors
A cop put his life on the line.
Now his ghost walks the beat on a dark city street,
And he stands at each new rookie's side;
He answered the call… of himself gave his all,
And a part of America died…

AN OFFICER GAVE HIS LIFE TODAY......GAVE HIS LIFE, HIS FUTURE, HIS FAMILY, AND FRIENDS....TO PROTECT AND SERVE. HE WILL NEVER HOLD HIS CHILD CLOSE DURING A THUNDER STORM TELLING HIM "IT WILL BE O.K.
HE WILL NEVER HUG HIS WIFE OR LOOK INTO HER EYES WITH PRIDE AS THIRE SON GROWS INTO A MAN,
HE WILL NEVER TAKE HIS SON TO HIS FIRST BASEBALL GAME OR PLAY CATCH WITH HIM ON A SUMMER AFTERNOON....
HE WILL NEVER HAVE THE CHANCE TO SIT ON THE PORCH WATCHING THE SUNSET HOLDING HIS WIFES HAND.
THESE ARE THE THINGS THE PERP TOOK AWY FROM OFFICER ALIA. HE DIDN'T JUST TAKE THE YOUNG OFFICERS LIFE HE ALSO TOOK ALL OF HIS TOMORROWS
BUT WE FIND COMFORT IN KNOWING THAT GREG IS NOW IN THE LORDS ARMS AND HE HEARD "WELL DONE GOOD AND FAITHFUL SERVANT...WELL DONE! "
REST NOW NOBLE WARRIOR AND GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY

God, filled with mercy, dwelling in the heavens' heights,
bring proper rest beneath the wings of your Lord,
amid the ranks of the holy and the pure,
illuminating like the brilliance of the skies the soul of Greg Alia who went to his eternal place of rest.
May You who are the source of mercy shelter him beneath Your wings eternally,
and bind his soul among the living, that he may rest in peace. And let us say: Amen.
