I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save. I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.
Yours, very sincerely and respectfully,
Abraham Lincoln

Horrible tragedy. My heart goes out to all who know and love Officer Smith. So long as this hero is kept in their hearts and minds, he will never be truly gone. They are in my prayers.

Also in my prayers is the officer who let off the round. It was an accident and no doubt he/she is going through his/her own personal hell right now. There but for the Grace of God go all of us. Work at forgiving yourself and heal.

God Bless you Officer Smith and may you forever Rest in Peace, Brother.
