Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Trooper James Michael Sauter

Trooper Sauter was one of the nicest, conscientious, most cooperative law enforcement officers I have come in contact with in my time with the Will County State's Attorney.

I will miss seeing him in the jury box, waiting, sometimes hours, for a trial to go and if four hours later there was no trial, he never got frustrated. He was such, an extremely genuine person. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family, including his fellow Troopers. His life is a life that was surely cut short to soon.

My deepest condolences to the wife of Trooper Sauter as well as his mother (Ilean), and his father (Donald), and his brother. Trooper Sauter lost his life in performance of his duties, basically doing what he truly wanted to do, patrol and protect other motorists on our Interstate highways. Trooper Sauter previously served as a pilot with Illinois State Police Aviation unit, but decided to return to patrol duties because of his love to be on the road protecting other motorists. I will retierate this fact once again; Trooper James Sauter truly cared for other people as clearly evident by his decision to leave the aviation unit and return to patrol duties. Trooper Sauter will never ever be forgotten because he was a decent, caring and loving human being. He is now in Heaven where he belongs. May God's Peace, Grace and Love be with Trooper Sauter's wife, his mother, his father, his immediate brother as well as his brothers and sisters in the Illinois State Police.

My heart goes out to the family of Trooper Sauter, to his fellow troopers and the citizens of Illinois for their tremendous loss. As I was reading the words of Investigator Dobbins, I recall being told the same thing in March 2001 when my husband, CHP Sergeant Gary Wagers, was killed. In the midst of all the sadness and sympathy the one thing that seemed to help me heal was the reminder that he'd died doing what he loved and that, unlike those who retire and are eventually forgotten, Gary's name would always be honored and remembered.

May God hold Trooper Sauter's family near and comfort them in their sorrow.

Linda Wagers, widow of Sgt. Gary Wagers

TO THE FAMILY, FRIENDS AND COLLEAGUES OF ILLINOIS STATE POLICE, TROOPER JAMES SAUTER.

My heart is filled with great sadness at learning of the lost of your loved one and fellow Trooper.
The incident that caused your end of watch immediately took me back to the end of watch of my friend: Illinois State Police Trooper Chong Soo Lim on the 6th day of June 1995 when his unit was struck from behind while on a traffic stop on the Northwest Tollway and his unit burst into flames.
We all stand with the family and the Illinois State Police in this tragic time.
We in the law enforcement community are a family.
Though we may wear different uniforms and have different badges, shields or stars pinned upon our chest.
We consist of many different agencies from across the nation, for we are:
Municipal Police Officers, Sheriff's Deputies, State Police Investigators, State Highway Patrol Troopers, Conservation Officers, Correctional Officers and Federal Agents just to name a few.
We patrol small towns, large cities, county roads and state highways.
Whether active duty or retired, we are one family, a law enforcement family, brothers and sisters bonded together by HONOR, SERVICE and PRIDE.
Daily we honor our fallen brothers and sisters never forgetting their sacrifice.
Daily our position is clear that we will SERVE and PROTECT our communities without faltering and with no hesitation.
Daily we show pride in our chosen profession LAW ENFORCEMENT, for we willingly walk the line of GOOD over EVIL facing the unknown with COURAGE keeping our trust and faith in GOD.
We know that evil roam these streets and at any moment in the course of performing our duties the ultimate sacrifice might be required of us in the service to our community, for LAW ENFORCEMENT is not a job but a calling and only a few will make the decision to commit to that calling to serve for some will give all that they have.
TROOPER SAUTER
You did not die in vain
You sacrificed your life in the service to the citizens of the State of Illinois and held true to the trooper's motto of: INTEGRITY - SERVICE - PRIDE.
I'm proud to have worn the uniform of a law enforcement officer like you did.
I'm proud to have pinned the badge upon my chest like you did.
I'm proud to have served and protected my community as you did.
I'm proud to call you my BROTHER!
I commend you my fallen brother for making the ultimate sacrifice in the perfomance of your duty.
For you left us doing what you chose to do.
Performing a job you were trained to do.
Upholding the oath you swore to do.
Most importantly doing what you loved to do..........SERVING and PROTECTING your community with HONOR and PRIDE making a better and safer place for us all.

FINAL CALL
TROOPER SAUTER STATUS...............TROOPER SAUTER STATUS...............
TROOPER SAUTER STATUS...............................
ATTENTION ALL UNITS..............................ILLINOIS STATE POLICE, TROOPER JAMES SAUTER I.D. 6095 HAVING SERVED THE CITIZENS OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS WITH HONOR, PRIDE AND DISTINCTION IS NOW 10-42.
Rest in Peace my fallen Brother, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!!
