The members of the Mille Lacs County Sheriff's Office wish to extend our most heartfelt condolences to the Decker Family, the members of the Cold Spring Police Department and the citizens of the City of Cold Spring. There are no words we could ever express to you the sadness we feel in our hearts today.

Some of us worked with Tom for a brief time here in Mille Lacs County, in the City of Isle. I personally remember Tom as a bright and eager rookie officer. He was the typical rookie officer trying to learn as much as he could and always ready to lend a hand wherever he could. Tom will be missed and his service to his community will never be forgotten. He has made the ultimate sacrfice and we cannot thank him enough. May God bless you and keep. you.

TO ALL POLICE OFFICERS;

Unless you are born from water and the spirit, you cannot enter God's kingdom. Human life comes from Human Parents, but Spiritual life comes from the Spirit. You must be born again.

The Policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, officer. How shall I deal with You?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my Church have you been true?"
The officer squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't.
Cause those of us who carry badges can't always be a saint.
But I never took a penny that wasn't mine to keep,
Though I worked a lot of overtime when the bills just got too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help, though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me, I wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place among the people here.
They never wanted me around except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here, Lord, it needn't be so grand.
I've never expected or had too much.
But if you don't, I'll understand."
There was silence all around the throne where the saints had often trod.
As the officer waited quietly for the answer of his God.
"Step forward now, Officer, you've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's Streets. You've done your time in Hell."

To Officer Decker's family, friends and fellow police officers, my sincere condolences. To his mother, I feel your pain as only another mother who has lost a son on duty. Matthew was the same age - nearly 32 - when he was killed instantly in an automobile accident on duty. It has been six years of excrutiating pain. I wish you the peace I have not yet found. I am so so sorry for your loss.
