Reflections for Sergeant Darrell Cervandez Curley

In Honor of your Sacrifice and for your family and friends, I salute you as a HERO!

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Sgt. Curley, I thank you over and over for the many times that you shared your words of wisdom, support and encouragement to myself throughout the years. Each time that we made contact with one another, you always brought a smile to my face and I would leave your presence, a better person and a better officer. The pain I feel now is too great to describe. You are a beautiful person. You are a friend that I will never ever forget. Your family is in my prayers always. Our law enforcement family is also in my prayers. May you be with the Lord and continue the "Watch" and continue to protect us throughout our days. You left us as a "Warrior" in every sense of that word. You did not give up the fight, Brother. You are a True Warrior. I am proud to have known you. Rest In Peace my Friend and Brother.

While we are all aware that the shield can exact a heavy price, it is not for personal or material gain that we wear it. It is out of empathy and compassion for our nation and its citizens that we respond to the need. I know you understood this well my friend and you never faltered in your dedication and commitment as your duties took you across this great beautiful nation we call home.

My heart is heavy now my brother, your departure has left a void that is felt by all who knew you, loved you, and appreciated you. I thank you for your service to the Navajo Nation and I thank your family for sharing you with us.

The watch is over for you my brother, may the Lord Jesus Christ receive you and grant you rest. You will never be forgotten. We will maintain the watch by your example.

I was so sadden to hear of the death of SGT. Curley and my heart has been heavy since. I met him soon after I came to Page. He was always very supportive of our program and was instrumental in getting the Emergency Mobil Response Team started on the Nation. He always believed in our mission and was helpful in every way. I think he was an officer’s officer. But more importantly, he was a kind and decent man with a good heart. I think he touch a lot of people…I know he touch me. The world is lessened by his death but better off that he lived among us.
Our prayers are with his family.
