Your watch is ended. May our Heavenly Father watch over your family and friends during this tragic time. May your soul walk carefully and proudly into everlasting life. You will be in our thoughts and prayers. Rest in God’s peace my friend, you deserve it. These are "American Heroes" who just yesterday were women and men just doing their job!

I am shocked and saddened . Officer Surles is one of the finest in Saint Clair County.

I first met Greg in Odenville, Alabama. I un-expectantly found myself residing in Odenville and living with my brother. I accepted a quick job working third shift at the Exxon Food Mart intersecting 411 and Alabama Street. I had never worked as a cashier at a convenience store and certainly wasn’t keen on the 3rd shift . I was apprehensive with crime and robbery. As fate would have it , the store was held up. Officer Greg Surles of Odenville was off duty and listening as I telephoned in ( the friggin panic button did not work in the store).

He was the first to arrive and secure the location. Needless to say, I was extremely scared. Greg took control and I was able to finish my shift.

From that night on he would stop by and see how things were going. He would stop in and take a break, invite his cohorts to stop in and take breaks. I was greatly relieved and continued working.

During this time, I began to know Officer Greg as a person and a young man. His integrity and morals shined through. I held great admiration for this young man and the Mother and Father that raised him.

Time passed and I left Odenville. I now reside in Pell City and wanted to contact Greg a couple of yrs ago. I found him and was able to meet with not only him, but, with his wife, young daughter, mother-in-law, and one other relative. Yes, he invited me into his home.

I feel as though I have lost a Pell City family member. He was not only familiar with me, but , with my children as well. We are terribly saddened and can only think of how hard it is for his family right now.

God will give back to him what he gave many of us.

With sincerest regards and respect, Janet Bentley.
