As someone who calls Pell City my home and has personally met, laughed, and joked around with many of the past and present protectors of lives - I bid adieu to one of the nicest officers I ever met. I only met him once at a store while he was grabbing a cold drink. My husband and I stopped to put gas in the pickup and he was in there. You know, a lot of citizens out there are nervous to talk to police - I wouldn't know why. I have a very good friend who is a St. Clair County deputy and I met him years ago while working in a convenience store. Some of the nicest and craziest folks I've ever met were Police officers. My prayers go to his family, friends, and co-workers. Thank God for his time with us. You will be missed

my heart goes out to this precious family during this very difficult time. may it comfort you to know that officers and their families from all over the country are praying for you. (i gained a great deal of support and encouragement for MANY days following my husband's death as i read back through everything they wrote and realized what an honor it was to be a part of such a "family".) may you find peace as you remember him with pride, knowing that he gave his all in doing what he loved.

grace to you,

Greg was truly a good guy, although it has been over 7 years since I last saw greg. I will greatly miss him. The last time I saw him was shortly after he accidently shot himself in the foot and I called him Barney. He laughed and said you will pay for that. Unfortunately I will never see the day when I get my pay back for that.

To the family of Officer Surles and the Pell City PD:
My deepest sympathy for your loss. I know that the
entire law enforcement community across the nation
joins in pausing to remember and honor the service
of a young officer cut down too soon.

Words cannot express to Greg's loved ones the understanding
that those of us who have endured this type tragedy before
share but just the knowlege that officers and citizens
across the country who may not have known Greg honor and
respect his dedication and sacrifice to the profession
he chose to protect and serve his fellow citizens.

His memory will endure. His family will remember and
his profession will be better because he served in it.

God bless his family and department. Thank you Greg for
your service.
