I don't know where to begin....I was already out on the street late Halloween morning, looking for the individual who shot the cop at 66th and Broad Street. A Philly Highway patrolman and myself had someone stopped on the street, as everyone was being stopped, we were trying to set up a perimeter around the shooting. The Highway guy told me the name of the cop that was shot started with a "C". I couldn't beleive it when I asked him "Chuck Cassidy"???, and he said "yeah, that's it".

When I was new to Philly, Chuck and his partner Mike bent over backwards to help me learn the ropes of the 35th with a case we had in the District. They never minded the "Fed" jumping in the back of the marked unit to help me look for someone who I needed to talk to in their sector. I last ran into Chuck a year ago when my team called an Officer Assist in the 35th for a drug deal gone sideways. Chuck was right there with the rest of the 35th, and we rounded up all the crooks; Chuck finding the two ringleaders on the roof of a warehouse. I'll never forget the last time I saw him and his good natured smile, always telling me if I needed anything up in the 35th, just call. And I knew he meant it. I'll miss you brother.

Chuck I cannot help but think that when you where going threw the police accademy 25 years ago the news in the the city of Philadelphia was about officer Danny Faulkner and how he was murdered in 1981 but you went threw with your training and went on to be an officer and last year when officer Gary Scerski was murdered I am sure that you where 1 of the first to go out on the search for his killer. For all your years of service I thank you. To the family and friends of officer Cassidy and fellow officers my deepest simpathy. As for I will never forget Chucks ultimate sacrifice

When first hearing the news today while at court, the dreaded, "hey something just happened in the 35th" quote was spread through the conference room outside room 606 like wild fire.

Cell phones appeared, buzzing on vibrate, chirps coming over nextels, and court beat officers' radios, usually silent, were blaring.

The sense of urgency fell on us all.

The question of, "who was it?" was echoed off walls.

At first it was, "a cop from the 35th was shot".

Then once the cell phones got reception it became clearer as to whom the victim was.

Charles, Chuck as i know him, Cassidy was relayed to us weary and frantic officers.

Chuck, man, it just seems so sureal. I mean that morning me and another officer were talking about you at court. Then 3 hrs later we were standing in the hospital hoping for the best.

WE ALL struggle to comprehend this...but, we ALL can rest knowing that we knew a Great Cop and a Great Guy.

May you look down on all of us and keep us safe until we have roll call together again in Heaven when God calls out for Badge # 2342 and I hear you respond with a, "hear Sir".

God Bless You Chuck.

Rest in Peace Brother, you and your family are in our prayers!

Prayer for all Law Enforcement Officers

The Officer's stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
They hoped their shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as their brass.

"Step forward now, Officers.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"

The men squared their shoulders and
The Policeman spoke first
"No, Lord, I guess We ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges
can't always be a saint.

We've had to work most Sundays,
and at times our talk was rough,
and sometimes we've been violent,
Because the streets are tough.

The Corrections Officer then added,
But we never took a penny,
That wasn't ours to keep...
Though we worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.

And we never passed a cry for help,
Though at times we shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive us,
We've wept unmanly tears.

Together they say,
We know We don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted us around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for us here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
We never expected or had too much,
But if you don't...We'll understand.

There was silence around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the Officers waited quietly,
For the judgment of their God.

"Step forward now, Officers,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."
