Reflections for Police Officer Jose Lazaro Somohano

Rest In Peace Brother. Your family and friends are in my prayers.

Officer Dwight Rackley
Louisville Metro PD, Louisville, KY

September 16, 2007

I have been a Police Officer for almost 19 years now. September 13, 2007, was a tragic and sad day during my watch. What has come of this world when one has lost such respect for the life of the very person that one calls to face anothers fears. To take the life of a Police Officer and to attempt the same for an additional three because they were doing their job.

Rest in peace my fallen brother. I did not know you personally but, like everyone else that wears the uniform, you are my brother. My thoughts and prayers go out to your wife, children and the rest of the law enforcement community.

“My Brother"

Although I never met him, I knew him.
He was idealistic and believed he could make a difference.
He was immensely proud of the uniform and the badge and what they represent.
He felt privileged to be of service to his department, his community and to his country.

He was a cop.

Although I never met him, I knew him.
He was friendly, courteous, and polite, yet firm.
He laughed and joked, but was serious when necessary.
He was competent, trained, and professional.

He was a cop.

Although I never met him, I knew him.
He had a strong sense of right and wrong and became
frustrated when true justice became sidetracked.
He felt the sharp criticism that goes with the job, but he
never wavered.
He stood by and for his fellow officers.

He was a cop.

Although I never met him, I knew him.
He longed for his family during the long hours.
He worried about them during his shifts and the lonely
weekends, holidays and midnights when they were apart.
He felt guilty about the lost time, but knew his calling
and prayed they would understand.

He was a cop.

Although I never met him, I knew him.
He was a good son, a loving husband, and a devoted father.
He was dedicated to the profession and cared about the
people he served.
He wanted to do the best job that he could and strived to
be the best he could be.
He was a good citizen and a good neighbor.

He was a cop.

Yes, I did know him.
He was a cop, he was my Brother.

Rest In Peace Brother! We have the watch...

TO: OFFICER SOMOHANO,
What you gave,no one should have to,especially at your age. You were cheated so many years. Words of Thanks can never be said enough. You are a "true" Hero. You gave your own life so that others would have the chance to live in a safer world. I hope your family may find some comfort in knowing that they will be together with you again. God Bless

Just like we were proud of you for your ultimate sacrifice you to would have been proud to see the assistance that arrived shortly after the shooting. There is no other profession that reacts like ours when one of us is in need. Your department reacted like professionals and did the job that needed to be done while suffering and fighting back tears. I saw departments from all over including Homestead, Miami PD, Miami Beach, Ft. Lauderdale, BSO, Miami Dade School Police, FHP, FDLE as well as DEA Agents, ICE Agents, Homeland Securtiy, US Marshals, FBI...All working together to bring an end to another tragic day in South Florida...Don't worry Jose, your brothers in brown will take care of your family. You will be missed but never forgotten.
