Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Sergeant Christopher Reyka

Working at the department adjoining Pompano Beach for quite a few years, I was able to meet you on Alpha Shift a few years ago. When my wife woke me up this morning with the news that "another BSO Deputy was shot and killed", I was immediately awake and had to rush out to the TV to find out more info. Since I am not active in Law Enforcement as I used to be, I had to rely on my contacts within the Pompano Beach District 11 community. It devastates whether you know the person or not, just because he was out there doing the job that we were supposed to be doing and not just hanging out all night. He will truly be missed. May he Rest in Peace and look over all of those that are still down here looking for his killers. God Speed brother.

We offer our heartfelt sympathy to the family, friends and colleagues of Sergeant Reyka and we honor his distinguished service to the cause of justice and peace. Sadly, our nation has lost one of its finest citizens, a community has lost a friend and protector, and a family has lost an example of character and courage who they will love and respect forever. Today, because of the sacrifice Sergeant Reyka has made, the house of freedom is stronger, sturdier, and more secure.

To the family and friends of Sergeant Reyka, I would like you to know that a lot of people pray for you, and my hope is that their prayers will give you the strength necessary to move on. Just as you were always with him when he walked the beat or patrolled the streets, know that he will always be with you - wherever you may be. In the days to follow, may you be strengthened by the fact that Sergeant Reyka is a man distinguished by exceptional courage and will always be admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities. You, your family and your sacrifice will never be forgotten.

RIP

Saint Michael, heaven's glorious commissioner of police, who once so neatly and successfully cleared God's premisesof all its undesirables, look with kindly and professionaleyes on your earthly force.

Give us cool heads, stout hearts, and uncanny flair for investigation and wise judgment.

Make us the terror of burglars, the friend of children and law-abiding citizens, kind to strangers, polite to bores, strict with law-breakers and impervious to temptations.

You know, Saint Michael, from your own experiences with the devil, that the police officer's lot on earth is not always a happy one; but your sense of duty that so pleased God, your hard knocks that so surprised the devil, and your angelic self-control give us inspiration.

And when we lay down our night sticks, enroll us in your heavenly force, where we will be as proud to guard the throne of God as we have been to guard the city of all the people. Amen.

Sergeant Reyka -

It has been a few years now since I worked for you on the mean streets of Pompano Beach. I remember when you got promoted to Sergeant - everyone in the district knew you were one of the best for the job and the best at what you did. You had a calm and easy going way about you that is surely going to be missed. I always remember whenever I had to pick up my revised reports as a new deputy that you would explain the reasons for the changes, unlike others, and it made me a better cop. You always took the time to help anyone out that needed it and were always someone I had immense respect for. You lead from the front and know that everyone that had the opportunity to work for you, with you and around you will always remember the Sergeant we are all going to miss so much.

I will say a prayer for you and your family tonight and know that we are all here for them to help them recover from this devastating loss.

It was my honor to have known you. Take your seat in heaven Sergeant Reyka - we'll take it from here.

Final Inspection

The Police Officer stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, you policeman,
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My Church have you been true?"
The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't.
Because those of us who carry guns,
Can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
And at times my talk was tough.
And sometimes I've been violent,
Because the world is awfully rough.
But, I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep...
Though I worked a lot of overtime,
When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God, forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place,
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around,
Except to calm their fears.
If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't, I'll understand."

There was a silence all around the throne,
Where the saints had often trod.
As the police officer waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, you policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in Hell."
