Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Officer Andrew Todd Stevens

Andy,

Me, Phil, Rob, Ike, Claudelle, Mike, Tony, Arnold, Javier and many other Chippies were in Washington D.C. for the Memorial Ceremony. We shed many tears while we reflected on your life and made rubbings of your name. We toasted your name in the local bars (Kelly's and Dubliner)and smoked a few cigars in your honor.

We miss you, Andy!

Dana

P.S. We need to get a better picture of you on this site! This Academy picture doesn't show your true "level of experience!"

Andy,

Until yesterday, I was unaware of the tragic incident and the ultimate sacrifice that you had made in the line of duty. When I arrived at the 2006 National Law Enforcement Memorial, I was met almost immediately by your partners, friends and fellow Officers from the California Highway Patrol. In conversation, they recounted the tragic event, and praised you as an outstanding police officer, loving husband and a trusted brother. I was then afforded the tremendous honor of being asked to stand within the ranks of the California Highway Patrol for the procession of the survivors entering the memorial service. It was a privledge for me to stand with the California Highway Patrol as they honored your memory, and displayed their support for your family and loved ones. Although we never met in life, I will never forget the sacrifice that you made.

To CHP Officer Andy Stevens and his loved ones:

On this the fourth month after your tragic death, please know that your memory is honored and revered today.

My heart is still with your family and I look forward to spending time with them in Sacramento and/or D.C. You’re all in our thoughts and our prayers.

Andy, you rescued us, saved our lives and our families. You are one of the rare heroes among us. You were always there for us in the most traumatic moments of our lives. No matter when we called, we just expected that you would come and do whatever it took to help us, and you always met our expectations. Your selflessness and dedication are awe-inspiring.

This world, this country, your community truly are better places because of you. To have lost you is a great tragedy, an irreplaceable, immeasurable loss for society. We are grateful for and to you, and honor you for all you did for us day in and day out whether you received a word of thanks or praise.

Rest in Peace, Officer Andy Stevens. I am so humbled by your valor and courage.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the distinquished service Andy gave to his community and the citizens of Califonia, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on November 17, 2005.

Andy, it is March this past Saturday I went with you mom to put flower and a Birthday Card on your grave. I miss you so much you had so much to do with my life. I am so hurt that someone could just take you away. I know that you are with God and that he needed you but please help him look after all the other officers in the world that wear the badge. Andy, I attended a COPS meeting this past weekend and had the pleasure of sitting next to your wonderful mother Pat. We shared our feelings about the loss of our sons and its impact on our families, and our thoughts were so alike. I know that she comforted me, and I hope that I comforted her.

Your valor will never be forgotten and you will always be missed.

Dear Mr. Mark Stevens

From one sibling who lost a brother in the line of duty to another, I am so very sorry for your loss. I cry with you. I share your pain, your anger, your disbelief, your grief. Continue to stand strong, as you are doing. In the midst of this horrible tragedy, nothing can diminish the immeasurable pride I feel for Andy’s service, courage and sacrifice, as well as that of my own beloved brother. I don’t know if they ever met each other in life, but I like to think they are friends now, in a much, much better place. He will never be forgotten.

Respectfully,

Carmen Stevenson

Michelle,

Although I have never met you personally, I knew Andy only briefly. He seemed a happy and contented man. When I realized Officer Stevens, was H.O.G's Andy, I was truly shaken. The story of Officer Stevens, was sad enough, just knowing an officer was killed in the line of duty, but someone you know, makes it all the more personal.

I know there are many Offices who wonder what the community thinks of them and lately we have thought about putting out the blue lights in remberence of Andy as well as in support of our other officers. WE regret that we never told Andy how much we appreciated him and the work he did. We do appreciate our CHP and all our law enforcement.

I cannot imagine how difficult these days must be for you. Seeing you at the toy run bravely reminded me that life does go on.

God bless and keep you. I know that God will be watching over you during these next months. Please know that we will be praying for your continued recovery. Andy will always have a special place in my heart.

My fiancé, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. Dennis was a Deputy Sheriff with the Davis County Sheriff's Office in SE Iowa. Dennis died doing a job he loved, just as I'm sure Andy did. It saddens me to know that Dennis was not the first to die in the line of duty, nor will he and Andy be the last to die this way.

Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Officer Steven' family, friends, and co-workers are going through in losing him. My heart goes out to you all, especially to his wife. No one can truly understand the pain of loss until they've walked in our shoes. Please know that my thoughts are with you and that you are not alone in your "journey". Should you ever need anything please do not hesitate to contact me. (The Davis County Sheriff's Office will always know how to reach me or write jocelyne1974 at canada dot com)

As a fallen officer "survivor" and a friend, please accept my condolences on behalf of myself and the McElderry family. I never got the opportunity to know Andy but, I am certain he was well respected and well loved. Andy will live on in the hearts of all the lives he touched. You were all blessed to have been able to know and love Andy, even for a short time. I pray that Andy, Dennis, and all the other fallen officers will continue to watch over us all as only they can.

Thank you Officer Stevens for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please say "hello" to my fiancé Dennis for me.

Wishing you and all those who's lives you touched brighter and better days,

Jocelyne :)

Brother Stevens,

May the road rise up to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
And the rains fall soft upon your fields,
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.
