Steve,
I just can't believe this week. You are a brave soul and a true soldier. Your presence will truly be missed. I'm sorry it took me so long to leave my thoughts, but I had to get my head around the thought of you not being here. I'll truly miss that infectious smile and that, "Hello, brotha", every time I saw you! I will always keep you in my thoughts. To your family, I don't know anyone who didn't LOVE Steve. My prayers will always be there for you.

P.S. You and Nova keep it down up there!

On behalf of the men and women of Industry Sheriff's Station, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, our heartfelt condolences to the men and women of the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department on the tragic death of Sergeant Gaughan. Having lost Deputy Michael Arruda last year (EOW 06-15-04) and now Deputy Jerry Ortiz (EOW 06-24-05), we know all too well the pain and reality of losing one of our own. Take comfort from knowing your extended law enforcement family is grieving with you.

Though I did not have the pleasure of meeting CPL GAUGHAN, I do morn the loss of a fellow brother.

The difference between a Police Officer and a civilian is the fact that when gun shots ring out, Police Officers run toward them not away from them.

You gave your life in order to keep peace. Now it is your turn to rest, for we will continue the job you started.

Steve,

You were a hero to us long before you fell last Tuesday. Certainly, we could never tell you that when you walked among us, because you'd never let us live it down.

You were were the warror who charged in when everyone else was running out. Your strength carried us through the door with you, when good common sense was telling us not to go.

I am honored to have fought by your side.

When the warm summer wind blows on a hot night at work I always know it's our brothers above watching our backs. You gave what we all know we would give and for that there are no words that can express what we feel, our actions and persistence will speak our gratitude.......You fought the good fight, we'll take it from here.

I worked with Steve for many years when I was a dispatcher. There was never a dull moment with him. We had fun and we worked hard -- Steve loved his job. More than that, he loved becoming a father. I remember before he and his wife got their children, Steve came into the office where I was working and was showing off pictures of his kids. We joked about his son having the same hair color -- Steve didnt have any! He was so excited and so proud to be a father. He was a good man, and always had a smile on his face. If he didn't then he was up to something. What a huge loss to our department and our community. The tremendous amount of people that came to the viewing and funeral show how many lives he touched. Steve, we will miss you and love you forever.

My fiancé, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. Dennis was a Deputy Sheriff with the Davis County Sheriff's Office in SE Iowa. Dennis died doing a job he loved, just as I'm sure Steve did. It saddens me to know that Dennis was not the first to die in the line of duty, nor will he and Steve be the last to die this way.

Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Corporal Gaughan's family, friends, and co-workers must be feeling. My heart goes out to you all, especially to his wife. No one can truly understand the pain of our loss until they've walked in our shoes. I wish I could give you a few words of wisdom to help you through these tough times, but there isn't anything I can really say or do to make the situation better. Just know that my thoughts are with you and that you are not alone in your "journey". Should you ever need anything please do not hesitate to contact me. (Dennis' department will also always know how to reach me.)

As a fallen officer "survivor" and a friend, please accept my condolences on behalf of myself and the McElderry family. I never got the opportunity to know Steve but, I am certain Steve was well respected and well loved. Steve will live on in the hearts of all the lives he touched. You were lucky to have had him be a part of your lives, even for a short time. I am know that Steve will continue to watch over us all as only he can.

Thank you Corporal Gaughan for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please say "hello" to my fiancé Dennis for me.

Wishing you brighter and better days,

Jocelyne :)
