Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Sergeant Michael Allen Scarbrough

God bless you and your family...

August 10, 2005

I can't believe it was 6 months yesterday. A half of a year! Sometimes it still feels like yesterday and sometimes it feels like a lifetime. We celebrated the boys 11th birthday at Caesarland. You would have had a blast. The boys had a great time but your absence was felt by all. I miss sharing all this with you. I miss your laugh and your humor and especially your hugs. We always said we fit together so well. I'm trying to stay upbeat but sometimes it's so hard. You know I was never the most patient person. I can't imagine all the firsts that I have to go through alone. If I really think about this too much I get overwhelmed. I want to rush through this grief of mine but I know I can't. Please watch over us and help to give us strength. I love you boo.

Hey Mike-

Stopped by again today.

Prusak, Chamie and I even walked over and said hello to DPD Ofc. Bowens, found out that he's just around the corner from ya.

Talked to Denise at the golf outing,we couldn't believe how many times we each see the number "33" all over the place. Keep it up, it's a pretty cool trick.

Take care buddy-

Hey Mike. I'm sure you saw us run the Culpeper 5K. We did it in your honor. I ran with Mark and Josh. Wow !! those boys have the stamina of their father. Kelsey whipped us all. I can't believe we all finished, but we did. Denise and me finished at the same time: 33:59. Check out those first 2 numbers. An officer from the Culpeper Police (Officer Roscoe Barnes) requested one of your shirts, so we gave him one). Speaking of your shirts, we all ran the 5K wearing them. Black is the wrong color to wear while running a 5K. I'm sure you got a chuckle out of it. Bridget ran the whole thing and never walked

Hey Buddy-

Prusak and I stopped by today to visit. Took a while to find ya, but somehow we did.

We found it funny that we had to croon our necks to finally look up at you after all these years of looking down.

We sounded the sirens and ran the lights on the bikes for you! Sorry, we didn't have any flowers for you but we figured you'da just laughed at us if we had.

Still missin ya, all the guys are.

Saw some pictures and a small video of you over the weekend. That laugh of yours.....

Happy 4th Buddy, Happy 4th!

Always thinking of you

June 26, 2005

Has there ever been that "one" officer that gave you a piece of advice, or helped you out with a screwed up report. Maybe it didn't mean that much at the time, but as time passed, and YOU were faced with the "new guy" you found yourself saying those same words or offering some assistance.
When I met Mike, I was new to the road and inexperienced and Mike offered me his knowledge and experience. I continue to operate by the knowledge and experience he gave me. Last year after having been gone from the Airport Police for approx. 4yrs. I met Mike on a EOD call out in our town. Mike still had the same bounce in his step. I congratulated him on his promotion, and we spoke briefly about life. After leaving, I told the officer I was with "that's one of the best cops you'll ever meet". In reading your reflections and the words spoke about you, that statement is the truth. Thanks Mike for taking the time to talk to me.
Just thinking about ya...

The Dash

I read of a man who stood to speak
at the funeral of a friend.
He referred to the dates on his tombstone from the beginning-to the end.

He noted that first came the date of his birth and spoke of the following dates with tears. But he said what mattered most of all was the dash between those years.

For the dash represents all the time
that he spent alive on earth...
and now only those who loved him
know what that little line is worth.

For it matters not how much we own:
The cars...the house...the cash.
What matters is how we live and love
And how we spend our dash.

So think about this long and hard
Are there things you'd like to change? For you never know how much time is left, you could be at "dash mid-range".

If we could just slow down enough
to consider what's true and real,
and always try to understand
the was other people feel.

And be less quick to anger,
and show appreciation more
and love the people in our lives
like we've never loved before.

If we treat each other with respect,
and more often wear a smile...
Remembering that this special dash
might only last a little while.

So, when your eulogy's being read
with your life actions to rehash...
would you be proud of the things they
say about how you spent your dash.

Author Linda Ellis

Mike,

When I read this poem in a book I instantly thought of you. Even though your time on earth was too short. Your accomplishments between the years (your dash is truly amazing) From being a loving husband to my sister, A patient Father to your children, A wonderful son, brother, uncle, brother-in-law and a true friend. You would be just as proud of your dash as we are.

We all love and miss you Mike!

Tonight was 5th grade graduation for Mark and Josh. I know you were there and couldn't be more proud to see the accomplishments and the awards your sons received for them. Denise was incredible, facing yet another milestone event with such courage. You were missed so much Mike. While watching the DVD of all the kids through the school years, a family picture of all of you came on the screen, it was met with a great round of applause. It was a message to you, Denise and the kids, we are all still right here with love and support and will be for always! God Bless Denise, Kelsie, Josh and Mark.

WHY?
We couldn't even say goodbye
All we did was find out and cry
We all know he was a wonderful man
That it was like God's plan
Now all we say is Why?
