Reflections for Investigator Lucille Cruz "Lucy" Ross

10/7/05

Lucy,

Your loved ones will be in my thoughts tomorrow, as they remember the day, one year ago, that forever changed their lives. I met your husband and sons at the Memorial in Tallahasse this year, and it breaks my heart to think of the boys losing their mother.

Lucy-Family and Friends
I was very sad and stunned to hear this news 6 months ago. I was fortunate enough to have learned a few things from such a great women. Now in grad school I am ahead of the class with the knowledge that I recieved from all my teachers. I only wish that I could be as talented as she was. But I assure you that what I learned in her classes and her memory will be passed on.

We would like to extend our condolences to the family of Lucy Ross. I had Invest. Ross while in the Academy and she was nice enough to allow my wife to attend that class, since she is interested in the profession.
There was never a time when you would see Invest. Ross without a smile on her face.
Heaven has a wonderful angel and we have a great one watching down on all of us.
She will always be greatly missed.

A Policewomen's Prayer

Oh lord, I am a woman, not a man,
I am a Mother not a Dad,
I am a wife with responsibilities that men have never had,
I need understanding from all my peers,
that I am not here to take away a man's job,
I am doing it because I care.

I took the job to enforce the law,
to do my part in the fight to have justice FOR ALL.
To be professional, to make a career, Great Lord,
help me when they say I should not be here.

I work the long hours, face all the dangers and do the same
things that they do in law enforcement matters,
Grant me the respect like the others, for I am one.

Set aside for every other one, Lord,
being a policewoman is the most challenging job I have ever done,
be with me on my daily run, as you are with us all,
I thank you for the ability to enforce the law.

Amen

Dear the fine family of Lucy,

Lucy was a great person and great at her job. My thoughts and prayers are with you through your tough time, just remember God will help you throught.

Lucy has already imagined what it is like....

I can only imagine what it will be like, when I walk by Your side...
I can only imagine, what my eyes will see, when Your Face is before me!
I can only imagine. I can only imagine.
Surrounded by Your Glory, what will my heart feel?
Will I dance for you, Jesus? Or in awe of You, be still?
Will I stand in Your presence, or to my knees will I fall?
Will I sing 'Hallelujah!'? Will I be able to speak at all?
I can only imagine! I can only imagine!

I can only imagine, when that day comes, when I find myself standing in the Son!
I can only imagine, when all I will do, is forever, forever worship You!
I can only imagine! I can only imagine!

Yeah! I can only imagine!

Yeah! I can only imagine!

I can only imagine! Yeah! I can only imagine!! Only imagine!!!
I can only imagine.

I can only imagine, when all I do is forever, forever worship You!

Lucy,
We were both sworn in on the same date and from that day, we became friend. The years made us good friends. You taught me a lot, things that will never be forgotten. You have touched my heart deeply and there will always be in my heart for you. I have a picture of you in my office I look at daily. A day does not go by where I don't think of you. We know you were with us during our wedding, we felt your presence and your love. You truly are one of a kind and no one could ever come close to you. Because you were in it, this world is a better place. There will always be a empty place in this agency that only you could have filled. Rocky and I love you and will miss you forever. See you at the end of this journey we call life.

Lucy, There is not a day that goes by that I do not think of you. I only knew you for a year and a half, but you touched my life like you would not believe. I can only imagine how the people that knew you for longer are missing you. People say everyday what a "special" person you were and there is so much truth to that. I have a picture of you and Lilly on my desk and I see your beautiful smile everyday. I get sad when I think of not being able to talk to you and laugh with you anymore, but I know you are looking down from above. I miss you so much!! Everyone does. See you in Heaven!!

Your buddy,
Gloria

Please remember the fallen officers we have lost. Remember the men and women who died trying to make this world a safer and better place for us all to live in. Thank you Investigator Ross for a job well done. Please continue to watch over us and protect us as only you can. You will forever be at our side and in our hearts.

For those of you who still have loved ones with us please take the time to tell them how much you appreciate and care about them.

IF I KNEW

If I knew it would be the last time
That I'd see you fall asleep,
I would tuck you in more tightly
and pray the Lord, your soul to keep.

If I knew it would be the last time
that I see you walk out the door,
I would give you a hug and kiss
and call you back for one more.

If I knew it would be the last time
I'd hear your voice lifted up in praise,
I would video tape each action and word,
so I could play them back day after day.

If I knew it would be the last time,
I could spare an extra minute
to stop and say "I love you,"
instead of assuming you would KNOW I do.

If I knew it would be the last time
I would be there to share your day,
Well I'm sure you'll have so many more,
so I can let just this one slip away.

For surely there's always tomorrow
to make up for an oversight,
and we always get a second chance
to make everything just right.

There will always be another day
to say "I love you,"
And certainly there's another chance
to say our "Anything I can do?"

But just in case I might be wrong,
and today is all I get,
I'd like to say how much I love you
and I hope we never forget.

Tomorrow is not promised to anyone,
young or old alike,
And today may be the last chance
you get to hold your loved one tight.

So if you're waiting for tomorrow,
why not do it today?
For if tomorrow never comes,
you'll surely regret the day,

That you didn't take that extra time
for a smile, a hug, or a kiss
and you were too busy to grant someone,
what turned out to be their one last wish.

So hold your loved ones close today,
and whisper in their ear,
Tell them how much you love them
and that you'll always hold them dear

Take time to say "I'm sorry,"
"Please forgive me," "Thank you," or "It's okay."
And if tomorrow never comes,
you'll have no regrets about today.

My fiance, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. Dennis was a Deputy Sheriff with the Davis County Sheriff's Office in southeast Iowa. Dennis died doing a job he loved, just as I'm sure Lucy did. It saddens me to know that Dennis was not the first to die in the line of duty, nor will he and Lucy be the last to die this way.

Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Investigator Ross'family, friends, and co-workers must be feeling. My heart goes out to you all. No one can truly understand the pain of our loss until they've walked in our shoes. I wish I could give you a few words of wisdom to help you through this tough time, but there isn't anything I can really say or do to make the situation better. Just know that my thoughts are with you.

Please accept my condolences on behalf of the McElderry family and remember that Lucy is part of huge law enforcement family. If you ever need anything any number of them will be there for you (as I've quickly found out!) From reading the many reflections posted here, I am certain Lucy was well respected and well loved.

Thank you Investigator Ross for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please say "hello" to my fiance Dennis for me.

Peace, Love, Luck, and Happiness!
