Reflections for Police Officer Jesse Matthew Rittenhouse

To the family, friends and co-workers my prayers are with you. There is nothing anyone can say at this time to help you, I wish there was. The only thing that help me was knowing that Clint loved being a police officer and would not have traded places with anyone.
Officer Rittenhouse your family will miss you everyday, but we will never forget you. Look Clint up for me tell him we miss him...

Matthew Rittenhouse was my little brother. From the time he was small he searched for adventure- he wanted to be part of something exciting and something good. Becoming a police officer was an obvious choice. And he was good at it. Better than we ever knew, because he never bragged. He was outspoken about his adventures, but quiet about his good deeds. Most importantly, he had a good heart. A sweet spirit inside a big man. He made the world better- and we miss him.

I have known Matt since he was 5 years old. He always wanted a career in law enforcement. He looked forward going to work each day to the Harriman Police Department. Matt loved his work, his community, his friends/co-workers and his family. I am heart-broken because he was taken away so young. "Uncle Bill"

~The Dash Between The Years~

I read of a man who stood to speak
At the funeral of a friend.
He referred to the dates on her tombstone
From the beginning ... to the end.
He noted that first came her date of birth
And spoke the following date with tears,
But he said what mattered most of all
Was the "dash" between those years. (1900-1970)

For that "dash" represents all the time
That she spent alive on earth
And only those who loved her
Know what that little line is worth.
For it matters not, how much we own;
The cars...the house...the cash,
What matters is how we live and love
And how we spend our "dash".

So think about this long and hard
Are there things you'd like to change?
For you never know how much time is left,
That can still be rearranged.
If we could just slow down enough
To consider what's true and real,
And always try to understand
The way other people feel.

And be less quick to anger,
And show our appreciation more
And love the people in our lives
Like we've never loved before
If we treat each other with respect,
And more often wear a smile
Remembering that this special dash
Might only last a little while.

So, when your eulogy's being read
With your life's actions to rehash
Would you be proud of the things they say
About how you spent your "dash"?

Our son, Deputy Paul Hinkle, lost his partner last week. When we got the call about the accident, we were numb with grief. God Bless You, Matt Rittenhouse, for your service, and dedication to your community. I know you will be by the side of each rookie as they venture forth in this career with the same desire and good will you possessed.

God Bless your family with strength, patience, and inner peace. My prayers are with you, your family, your friends, and your co-workers, who feel so lost and will dearly miss you. Rest, and enjoy the comfort of God's arms, Matt. You've done well.

The following has been passed along worldwide, and I gladly share it with you:

The policeman stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry a badge
can't always be a saint."

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at time I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgement of his god.

"Step forward now, policeman,
You've born your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell"
