My heart sunk learning of the death of Trooper First Class Anthony Jones. My sincere sympathies go to the family of Trooper 1/C Anthony Jones, to the fellow Troopers at Barrack “Q” and to the family of the Maryland State Police.

I had an opportunity to meet Trooper First Class Anthony Jones in the summer of 2002. I rode with him for several hours covering the freeways near College Park. As a fellow State Police Officer, I was encouraged to complete a ride along with him. Trooper Jones was an excellent mentor and was a great Trooper. He spoke so highly of the job and organization. He was very proud to retire from the military and then join the Maryland State Police for a second career. He loved his job every minute he was on duty, the only better thing he could ever think of doing, was doing the same job as a Motorcycle Trooper with Maryland State Police motorcycle unit. He was proud of his family, his accomplishments, and the Maryland State Police.

My condolences go to the wife and children of Trooper First Class Anthony Jones. I’ll never forget his bravery, courage and loyalty Trooper First Class Jones #1875 portrayed, May you rest in peace and protect us from above.

God Bless

Trooper First Class Anthony Jones

"The Final Inspection"

The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges
can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills just got too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here,
Lord, It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.

There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.

"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

It is with great sadness and profound sorrow that I send my condolences to the fine members of the Maryland State Police abd to the family of Trooper Jones. In Januray 2000, I had occaison to serve with a large contingent of the the Maryland State Police who came to serve for the inauguration. I was greatly impressed by their professionalism, appearance and demeanor. Further, I live in Maryland and appreciate Trooper Jones's service and his obvious dedication to the citizen's of Maryland. Respectfully, Nicholas Breul MPDC

It hurts so much more when it's this close to home. Tony and I worked the same group from the time he graduated the academy until the time I left the job in January. I never had to worry about anything when we were working because he was always right there to back me up, even before I asked. He was a man that took great pride in his work and went out of his way to help so that our jobs would be easier, even if it meant his was more difficult. Tony was an incredible husband and father. I've met his daughters on several occasions and could honestly see how much love was in their family. His family will be constantly in my prayers.
Tony, you will be missed but I will never forget you. God bless you and rest in peace.

As I sit here remembering TFC Jones, I recall the smile that rarely left his face, I recall never hearing words of anger or ill words of another, he spoke of his family often, he always offered to help others complete assignments without regard to his own. These are just a few things to define his character. He was truly in a class of very few. TFC Jones was not only an excellent Trooper, he was a wonderful person, a angel sent from above to teach us all a thing or two about ourselves. My heart and prayers shall be with your family as they grieve your loss. God Bless you TFC JONES and thank you for the things you never realized you taught me.

At the beginning of every shift I supervise, myself and the other officers on shift dedicate the day to the memory of a fallen officer.

Today, May 10, 2004 we dedicated the shift to the memory of Trooper First Class Anthony Jones who died in the line of duty just yesterday.

When one law enforcement officer falls, we all stumble for a while, but we will carry on.

Trooper Jones’ sacrifice will never be forgotten.
