Reflections for Captain Robert T. Hansel

I really do miss Mr. Robert Hansel. He was my inspiration to become a teacher. I knew Mr. Hansel since I was 8 yrs. old. He was my teacher, coach, band director, and mentor. It seems that he followed me throughout my life. He was there in grade school (Green Hills Elementary), and through high school. I lost touch with him when I left Harlan County to pursue an education, but I always remember the smiles and good advice I have gotten from him throughout my years. It is almost a year since we lost Officer/Mr. Hansel, but I am always thinking about him.

Mr. Hansel,
You are missed by all who knew you. You made us laugh when we needed. You were there for us when we needed to cry. You watched over us in life and continue to do so in death.

My deepest sympathy goes out to the family of Mr. Hansel. He was a family friend ever since I can remeber. He was my bus driver when I went to Green Hill Elementary in the 70's. He taught my two brothers at Green Hill. After I was married It seemed as if Mr. Hansel was always looking out for me. When ever I had a problem I knew that I could go to him for help. He was one of the most nicest person, anyone could ever met.He will never be forgotten.May you rest in peace Mr.Hansel.

I knew Robert and his family for many years. I never heard an ill word from him. He was dedicated to keeping drugs out of Harlan County, especially our children. Having a son in law enforcement draws me even closer to this tragic loss.

I was at in service with Bob just about a year before this happened, he had given me and another officer I was in Richmond with some U.K. basketball tickets, it was the season opener vs. Highpoint, we all met at Sonny's BBQ and ate dinner in Lexington. He is sadly missed as an officer and as a friend

I met you when I was in the third grade. You was always there for me whenever I needed someone. I grew up knowing that if I ever need you, you would always be there. You always had a smile on your face. I wish I could have told you how much you meant to me and how much you done for me but I always took it for granted that you knew..I know that your not here but I do know that you are watching over me and everyone else as you always did..I miss you so much...

Mr. Hansel was the most kind hearted man that I have ever met, either in the classroom or on patrol. No matter where or how long it had been he always remembered you if you had a class with him. And he always had a smile on his face and that I will never forget. Rest in the arms of God, Mr. Hansel.

I was at the hospital in Lexington, we had just found out that she had terminal cancer and only had a few short months to live. A friend from Harlan called to let us know that Robert had been killed in a car accident. Both my mom and I where overwhelmed with grief. Only 2 years prior in October he was at my wedding and witnessing my marriage license for me. This man was so remarkable that he touched everyone with whom he came in contact with. A a band instructor he reached many children who discovered their voice while attending his classes. A an officer of the law he tried his best to keep Harlan as drug free as possible. I respect this man more than I can ever put into words. I loved him and today I miss him so much. I know Robert is keeping heaven safe for my mother and they both are flying with the angels.

Mr. Hansel was the band director at JACHS while I was there. He was also a friend of my family. He cared deeply for the students and would go out of his way to help anyone. A business I worked at was held up, he was off duty but heard it on his scanner. He was one of the first to arrive because he knew I worked there and wanted to make sure I was okay. He always had a smile on his face and a kind word to say. He will dearly missed.
