On this day, May 9th, 2013 John Riley Manning will once again be honored in memory by the Bessemer Police Department during our annual Flag Retirement Ceremony. While honoring the great flag of our loved country we will honor Officer Manning and pay tribute to his sacrifice over 124 years ago. A story will be told of how our Officer's honor him in the tradition of growing out they're beards and mustache as a sign of respect for Manning's courage and ultimate sacrifice. Rest in peace, remembered.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 120th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.

Rest In Peace.

Officer Manning,
I just wanted you to know I consider you to be one of Cullman's finest, since I know you are from Cullman, Alabama. I hope you know how much you are appreciated in Bessemer and Cullman. God Bless.

I have been doing research on Officer John Manning and have enjoyed reading about different accounts from other officer's on his courage, dedication and efficiency as an officer. I am honored to have served in the same department and city that officer John Manning did until his murder close to one hundred and sixteen years ago.

You were a Hero then, and still one today!

I stop by this website often after the death of two dear friends with the NCSHP (Troopers Calvin Taylor E.O.W. October 3, 2001 and Anthony Cogdill E.O.W. May 30, 2003). Unfortunately, I had to add the name of another friend recently. Deputy Jeffery Hewitt, Buncombe County (NC) Sheriff’s Department, E.O.W. April 4, 2004.

I want to honor all of those who gave their life in the line of duty. Although your death was many many years ago, you are still a hero.

God Bless the men and women who continue to serve their communities in our great Nation.

...Gone, but never Forgotten....

No Officer who gave his life should be without reflection. "For those who chose to uphold it, freedom requires a sacrifice the protected will never know."
