Law Enforcement United (LEU) members each year raise money and ride in memory of Fallen Officers. This year I have the honor and previlege to ride for Deputy Guard. Police Memorial Week is only a week away! It is long over due! but finally Deputy Sheriff Harry S. Guard will be added/engraved into the National Police Memorial in Washington D.C. this year (2013).

Deputy Guard was assigned as the Department chauffer in 1908. The LASD took possession of its first automobile the previous year.
The Model T he driving the day he and Deputy Benson were killed was open to the elements. It was a rainy afternoon and Deputy Guard's view was obscured by the elements and the odd design of the elevated trolley crossing where the collision with the trolley occurred.
Many witnesses who testified at the coroner's inquest stated that the trolley motorman may not have sounded the warning bells until the last second and was likely traveling at a speed faster than that which was safe given the conditions.
The tragic loss of Deputies Benson and Guard was sadly forgotten to history until very recently. Their sacrifice deserves to be remembered and honored.
Deputy Guard was survived by his wife, mother and two sisters.
