To the family and friends of Officer Gregory John Bailey, and his fellow officers with the CHP:

I am so saddened to learn of yet another loss of a dedicated officer from the ranks of the CHP. On behalf of our entire family, I extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you suffered when Officer Bailey was tragically killed in the line of duty.

May you all be comforted and supported by the warm embrace of your law enforcement family, and other police survivors who share this painful journey with you.

Officer Bailey's valor and dedication will not be forgotten.

I will never forget the many personal kindnesses of the CHP when our family lost our beloved Larry Lasater when he was fatally shot last April during a foot pursuit of two bank robbers. Even though he was not a CHP officer, he was a fellow brother and the CHP gave us their full support.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the years of distinquished service Officer Bailey gave to his community and citizens of California, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on February 25, 2006.

The policeman stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry a badge
can't always be a saint."

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at time I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgement of his god.

"Step forward now, policeman,
You've born your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell"

I was just checking the CHP page on the ODMP and saw that this makes six in the last six months.
I know of no words that will suffice, however, I would like for the family, friends and co-workers of Officer Gregory Bailey to know that there are folks all across this country that will lift you up in prayer before the Almighty.
May you each experience the eternal love, peace and blessings of our Lord and Savior.

Words can not say enough but, we mourn another hero that has been taken from us. If it was by accident or crimes against an officer it is a great loss. We will be praying for your family during these trying times. My deepest sympathy to the family, friends and co-workers. May the Lord give you strength and bless each of you during this time.
Remember these few verses from Psalm 23, The LORD [is] my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou [art] with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

I read with great sadness the death of Officer Gregory Bailey. Sadness over a senseless death...sadness over a family left behind...sadness in the recognition that this is the sixth line of duty death the California Highway Patrol has had to deal with in less than six months (September 2005 to the present). To the men and women of CHP, you are an outstanding organization with tremendously talented and professional officers. You are all in my thoughts and prayers as you attempt, again, to make sense of the deaths of so many heroes in such a short duration...take good care of each other and stay safe.
