Darrell was like a 2nd father starting in my early teens till the time he moved in my late thirties. When I learned of his death it was sad for me and all of my Mishawaka Indiana friends. He will never be forgotten.

Darrell had a love for the job and his brothers and sisters in blue they were just extended family as many of us know. I miss his sarcastic sense of humor most. I often felt like the mouse the cat was playing with then you would catch that glint in his eye and that fake laugh.

We talk about you often. Your memory is as bright as ever. We will continue to pass the stories down to the upcoming generations of citizens and police. If it were not for you and God's mercy our current sheriff would have been killed but you backed him up and did what you had to do. Thank you for all you taught the young guys who are now the old guys. They continue teaching what you taught them. Thank you...

To the family and friends of Officer Darrell Drehman and his fellow officers:

On beharlf of our entire family, we wish to pay honor to Darrell's memory on the ninth anniversary of the day he so tragically lost his life. His valor and service will be forever remembered.

May you be continue to be comforted by the support and caring of your law enforcement family, and other police survivors. We grieve for you and with you. Our family lost our beloved Larry Lasater when he was fatally shot in April of 2005 during a foot pursuit of two bank robbers, so we know the anquish you are still experiencing as the agony of this loss never diminishes.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the years of service Darrell gave to his community and the citizens of Tennessee, and the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on February 8, 2000.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I would just like to say that Darrell was a very special man to me. He was my great uncle and a very funny and humourus man. I will never forget the time we went to visit him at his home in Tennessee where he lived on the deer farm. Uncle Darrell you will never be forgoten.
