WUSTSBORO – It was 24 years ago on February 14 that State Trooper Nathaniel “Nate” Burroughs lost his life while conducting traffic safety on Wurtsboro Mountain during an ice storm.

Burroughs had taken immediate steps to secure the safety of the lone occupant of a damaged vehicle on Route 17 by activating his emergency lights and protecting the scene with his troop car.

As he began interviewing the driver in front of the damaged car, a tractor-trailer skidded off the ice-covered road into the police car, forcing it into the initial car, which hit the two men. Both were thrown a considerable distance with Burroughs dying from his injuries a short time later at Horton Memorial Hospital in Middletown.

Burroughs was a 10-year veteran of the State Police at the time of his death on February 14, 1997. Prior to his Wurtsboro assignment, he was stationed at New York Stewart International Airport.

I was one of the Firefighters who responded to Trooper Burroughs accident. I never had a chance to say what I had to say, but I thank Trooper Burroughs for his courageous acts and his selfless sacrifice to the people of New York, myself and family. That happened approximately 24 years ago, and it still haunts me to this day. You will never be forgotten by me. Thank you for your service Trooper.

I now look at your photo on the wall everyday I report to duty. Your last tour of duty predates mine by 16 years. Though I never knew you personally, I know you will be us all while we are standing out there. 18 years have now past since that day, and the weather and road conditions haven't changed ...wurtsboro troopers will always be looking out for each other. Rest in peace.

Nate and I worked together during the initial setup and inception of the NYSP Stewart Airport Detail in Newburgh, NY, following the grand opening to commercial air service for the general public. Although my time at the airport was a relatively short 6 months, he was a familiar fixture at the airport for many years to come, and always had a smile for me when I popped in to visit him or hang out for a beer after work. We miss you Nate! RIP...
