"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Uncle Mike:

We just had a CHPie pass away resulting in an on-duty accident outside of Winterhaven. I knew Robert and conversed many times with him over breakfast. He was a great man and a loving father and husband. His passing reminded me of you and your sacrifice and I wanted to let you know you are not forgotten.

Mike and I met in college. He was also the first person I ever trained when he was a cadet. We got together as often as possible, but always stayed in touch with frequent calls. I will never forget the night he was killed when his wife called me and told me Mike had been shot. The sound of her voice and what she said still haunts me today. Mike was a great friend with a fantastic sense of humor. I think of him often and miss having him as my friend. Rest in peace.

You would be very proud of Scott. He is quite an officer and I believe you had something to do with that. Rest in peace.

I met Mike in the spring of 1995 while attending an ATF advanced undercover class at the Federal Law Enforcement Center in Brunswick, Ga. We met as a fellow police officers but left as brothers. I learned that Mike was not only a true professional but also a true friend.

After the training we kept in touch with each other as he had talked about attending my wedding in the fall of that year. I last heard from Mike two weeks before he was murdered. He had left a message on my answering machine telling me that he was just checking up and making sure that I was doing okay.

On July 5th, 1995, I learned that my friend and brother had been killed in the line of duty while reading the Miami Herald. I was stunned beyond belief at losing Mike and more so over the fact that his life had been taken by a fellow law enforcement officer.

Mike was a husband, father and a true friend. He will never be forgotten. Every fourth of July I think about Mike and all of the good things that he accomplished in his personal life as well as in his professional life. Rest in peace Mike and godbless.

Uncle Mike,

I'm sorry I am just now getting around to leaving this reflection. I guess until now, I wasn't quite sure of what to say. I was 14 years old when you were killed. I remember being at the funeral. I had never seen so many cops in my life. I had also never seen so many people, in so much pain.

After you passed away, I continued to go to school. Eventually I went through the police academy and became a Deputy for the S.O. a couple months after my 21st birthday. Its no easy task, by any means.

Now that I'm on the job, I run into others that knew you. They tell me stories about you. Most of which are pretty funny. May'be some day when we meet up again, you can elaborate on some of them.

Until then, your always in my thoughts. God Bless...

I was staioned in Yuma in the Marines. I also worked with Rural Metro on the side. I had the honor of meeting him in the late 80's, but I admired his professionalism and the way he presented himself. It was he and other officers like him that inspired me to pursue this line of work. It is no doubt that he has been missed.
