On behalf of the Klamath County Sheriff's Office in Klamath Falls Oregon, we send our sincerest sympathy in the recent loss of your Sergeant and Officer, Paul Elmstrand in the line of duty. It is always a huge loss when a fellow Sergeant and an Officer makes the ultimate sacrifice. Their bravery and courage to protect and serve your community has not gone unnoticed. We thank Officer Elmstrand for previously serving as a Community Service Officer. Our prayers and thoughts to the family of Burnsville Firefighter/Paramedic Adam Finseth

Today Police Officers Matthew Ruge and Paul Elmstrand gave their lives in defense of others, mostly children, who were in mortal danger. Just pause for a moment to contemplate those few words. That single sentence is testament to the unbelievable courage, heroism and noble sacrifice by which these officers and their loved ones will be remembered.

Today Firefighter/Paramedic Adam Finseth gave his life in defense of others, namely, the two officers who were mortally wounded. He demonstrated the same courage, heroism and noble sacrifice, and he suffered the same fate. Law enforcement, firefighters and emergency medical responders routinely perform their respective duties arising from the same events. It is to be expected that these emergency personnel develop close bonds. Today's tragedy made Ruge, Elmstrand and Finseth blood brothers of the highest order. Rest in peace.

"Somebody killed a policeman today,
And a part of America died.
A piece of our country he swore to protect
Will be buried with him at his side.
The suspect who shot him will stand up in court,
With counsel demanding his rights,
While a young widowed mother must work for her kids
And spend alone many long nights.
The beat that he walked was a battlefield, too,
Just as if he'd gone off to war.
Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half mast,
To his name they will add a gold star.
Yes, somebody killed a policeman today,
It happened in your town or mine.
While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors,
A cop put his life on the line.
Now, his ghost walks a beat on a dark city street,
And he stands at each new rookie's side.
He answered the call and gave us his all,
And a part of America died."
