I've never worked on the inside of a prison or jail, but about 30 years ago when a young state Trooper I worked a Prison riot. I have never, ever agreed with all of the freedoms and "services" we provide inmates in any system-state or federal. The only way in my opinion to prevent this type of incident from happening again is to keep prisoners (in all but the most low-security institutions) locked down and with no possessions other than a rubber tooth-brush. Shaved heads, orange jumpsuits, flip-flops. No free-weights, no TV, NO possessions. It was supposed to be crime and "Punishment", not what it is today. God bless the men and women who put themselves in harms way to keep these people locked up and off the streets.

That is horrible. My prayers go out to his daughter and fiancee. As a fellow C/O I can only imagine that it was a surprise attack and Sgt. Thomas had no clue what was coming. It is a sad day indeed.
