Somebody killed a policeman today
And a part of America died...
A piece of our country he swore to protect
Will be buried with him at his side.
The beat that he walked was a battlefield, too,
Just as if he had gone off to war;
Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half-mast
To his name they will add a gold star.
The suspect that shot him will stand up in court
With counsel demanding his rights,
While a young widowed mother must work for her kids
And spend many long, lonely nights.
Yes, somebody killed a policeman today...
Maybe in your town or mine,
While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors
A cop put his life on the line.
Now his ghost walks the beat on a dark city street,
And he stands at each new rookie's side;
He answered the call... of himself gave his all,
And a part of America died...

As a former law enforcement officer, I have watched many fine police officers make the ultimate safricfice. Scott was my friend and my neighbor, and one of the most ethical decent officers I have ever known. When he wasn't working, he was with his family. Everyone who knew him commented on his good nature, kindness, warm smile and love for wife and his boys. This is a tremendous loss for everyone who knew him and we grieve him deeply. I ask that everyone keep Scott's wife and three very young children in their prayers. I, for one, will miss seeing my neighbor, speaking to him over the fence, having him wave to me as he passed by in his car and watching him play with his sons in the yard. Rest in peace, Scott. You were a good man and an amazing father. There will be a hole in the hearts of a lot of people, left by your absence.

In Honor of your Sacrifice and for your family and friends, I salute you as a HERO! May God
Give the family and friends the strength and faith to deal with this tragic loss. Words can not express my sorrow!

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

To the family and friends of Officer Scotty Richardson, his fellow officers, and most especially to Officer Richardson:

We honor your service to your community as a police officer and you will always be remembered and revered. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of our entire family, I wish to extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you suffered when Scotty was killed in the line of duty. It is obvious he was well-loved by many and well-respected by his peers as reflected in the loving reflections left for him.

May his loved ones continued to be supported by their law enforcement family and other police survivors. Our family grieves with you and for you. To Scotty's family, you are in my heart's embrace today.

Each day that a police officer dies in the line of duty is tragic and heart wrenching, but I cannot help but think of the nightmare that changes a home decorated for the holidays and a household anticipating the joy of Christmas to a place of enormous grief and shock.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the years of distinquished service Scotty gave to his community and the citizens of South Carolina, and the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on December 21, 2011.
