Ofc. Tokuoka,
Your courage that day will not be forgotten; I personally thank you for that. From a former Marine to former Marine, you showed extreme courage and bravery during combat, during a time when rounds were being exchanged, a time when most would run the other way - you, my friend, ran into the line of fire. You attempted to rescue a fallen brother. You are a combat warrior and hero, and will be honored as such. You did not think about your personal safety, or your family. Your only concern during these few split seconds were saving your brother in blue. I wish I can be as outstanding officer as you.

I had the honor to have known Mat as a Marine, we served together, 1st LAR BN "HIGHLANDERs" in 2002. I did not need to read the article about Mat to know that he was a man of VALOR, it did not suprise me after reading the article about the shooting: that Mat would leave the safety and comfort of his family to aid a brother in need.
To Mat's family, no words can express the loss you are enduring, knowing Mat's big heart and mighty laugh may they carry through these trying times.

His Judgment Day:
The officer stood and faced his God, Which must always come to pass. He hoped his shoes were shinning, Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, Officer, How shall I deal with you? Have you always turned the other cheek To my church have you been true?"
The officer squared his shoulder and said, "No, Lord, I guess I aint, Because those of us who carry badges can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays, And at times my talk was rough, And sometimes I've been violent Because the streets are tough.
But I never took a penny That wasn't mine to keep.. Though I worked a lot of overtime, when the bills got too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help Though at times I shook with fear. And sometimes, God forgive me, I've wept an unmanly tear.
I know I don't deserve a place among the people here. They never wanted me around except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here, Lord, it needn't be so grand. I never expected or had too much, But if you don't...I'll understand.
There was silence all around the throne, where the saints often trod. As the officer waited quietly for the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, Officer. You've borne your burdens well. Come walk a beat on heaven's streets, You've done your time in hell"

Officer Matthew Tokuoka our 1199 Inc. families are in shock with this news. You are the true picture of a hero. You went to the aid of your brother in law enforcement and lost your own life while doing so. To think of this happening in front of your family is truly sad beyond belief. Thank you for your amazing dedication and service, and being brave enough to rush to the side of your brother in LE. To your family, friends and fellow LE words can not express the sorrow we feel for all of you. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you. May God bring you wonderful memories of Matthew and peace to your hearts.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the families of these fine officers.
I was absolutely stunned when I read this report! I was there on a cruise less than a year ago and was treated like gold by all members of their department! Being a die-hard patch trader, I hiked the distance to their PD/FD/EMS station. Even though I protested, they insisted that I should take a patch from all three divisions. They were the nicest people I have met in a few short minutes.
I would bet that most people couldn't even fathom a guess as to where Hoonah is on the map. I have all three of their patches proudly posted on my board. They will stay there, with one reminder... There will now be a mourning band displayed on the PD one...
Unfortunately, I could never have dreamed that an incident like this would occur in such a charming small town.
I'm sure this has left the community reeling... God bless you gentlemen... You have already accepted your reward!
