Reflections for Officer Matthew Dean Tokuoka

I think of you a lot...I miss you. Nothing is ever the same without you and Tony. It's like no one could be happy again. Family dinners, picnics, UFC nights. Nothing is the same.

I know the kids miss you. They are always talking about their daddy and drawing pictures for you. Georgie always tries to put on a brave face for everyone. He's so strong. It makes me really upset when I think about how they will grow up without their father.

Auntie always tells me how you always talked about how i was your favorite, it makes me smile every time. It's been awhile since you and Tony have been gone. It seems like it was just yesterday that I last saw you. My heart still aches... I'll see you some day though...

Love, your favorite niece

Hey Matt:

I have no idea why but I just thought today of when you and Tony hung my academy certificates and honorable discharge and award certificate on my office wall upside down and I didn't even notice for 2 days until a visitor commented on it! HAHAHA! And I was supposed to be a trained observer!!! LOL. It is nice that I can think of happy times now and not be so sad but damn I still miss you man. I am sorry I didn't get to come to the clinic to say good bye to you in the minutes after you were shot but we had to contain the POS shooter and then you were gone so fast. I think of you and Tony every day of mi life bro. Semper Fi, you are the bravest cop or military man I ever knew. RIP buddy.

Matt was one of the rarest of people in that he did not know fear. As he was under fire, unarmed and in the line of sniper fire, he was as calm as a cucumber and gave a concise sitrep. Matt was truly a fearless, brave and honorable man, who loved his wife, kids, family, community and country. He was a man we all would emulate. He remains in my mind as the most courageous man I ever knew. I am sorry I didn't get to say much to you that night Matt with all the shoooting and chaos. I miss you and think of you everyday. RIP Devil Dog and Semper Fi!!!

Matt-

I was shocked today to learn of your death. I've been looking for you lately on various social media sites. It seems like yesterday; we were working that good ole Marine Sercurity Forces Detail at NSB Bangor.

You were an outstanding Staff Sergeant and I always enjoyed your company and sense of humor. I spoke with a few devil dogs from the old platoon. I love you and miss you my friend!

My heart goes out to your family and fellow officers. Rest in peace sir, your tour is done. Feel free to check in from time to time. If you get a chance bro, hang out with my old man; Officer David C. Uribe #4276, Phoenix PD: EOW 5/10/2005.

I look forward to the day when I can hang out with you all again!

Matt and I were friends in high school in little Kuna, Idaho. I was devastated to learn of Matt's death in the line of duty. I applaud his heroic actions taken before being shot by a coward and Matt's service to our country serving in the Marines. Matt, you and your family will be in my family's prayers.

To the family and friends of Officer Matthew Tokuoka and his fellow officers:

On behalf of my family, I extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you suffered when Matthew was tragically killed.

To Matthew's family, my heart goes out to all of you and may you find comfort in your loved ones and your strength in your faith. When my son was killed, the entire law enforcement community in the Bay Area embraced us in a circle of love and support, and I know you will receive the same support. It makes the unbearable less torturous, and I pray for your solace. The murder of every fallen officer is horrific, but to have the officer gunned down in front of his loved ones is almost beyond comprehension.
You are all in my heart's embrace

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the dedicated service Matthew gave to his community and the citizens of Alaska, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on August 29, 2010.

In Honor of your Sacrifice and for your family and friends, I salute you as a HERO!

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whose blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.
